Topic: Bonham - overrated, or not. Posted: September 23 2005 at 20:29 |
As an old time drummer, what I thought was unique about Bonzo was his ability to execute rimshots. The master of this lost art was of course Gene Krupa. To make the drums actually "sing". Ginger Baker was another.
This was a lost art in drumming that slowly disappeared with the hard hitting styles. It got to a point where most drummers would just pound without you knowing the distinctive difference between a direct hit or a rimshot.
Rimshots gave breath to drumming. A feel with accents. Bonzo, Baker and Bill Bruford are only a few in rock that kept that going.

he wasn't that technical but he was GREAT. just PERFECT for Led Zeppelin. As usually, I don't think a musician needs to have enormous skills to be judged great. Anyway, there is a roll on the toms in Achilles last stand that may prove me wrong...

I think Bonzo was a decent drummer. He shouldn't have drinked so much, but concentrate more on playing...

Jan Axel von Blomberg is the greatest drummer ever, not Bonham. But he's still not overrated!

Bonham was not as technically skilled as Bruford or Peart, but he was awesome - just listen to Moby Dick or When the Levee Breaks. There's a roll around the kit towards the end of the latter which is my favourite bit of drumming ever, and towards the "drop down" ending of "Custard Pie" he hits two toms then a cymbal - simple but NOONE else could have played it like that.

Bonham was a superb powerhouse of a drummer, and his tight but loose style was perfect for Zeppelin; could you imagine him playing with Rush, though? Similarly, would Bruford's playing enhance Zeppelin, or change the dynamic utterly?
Bonham/Peart/Bruford = Chalk/Cheese/Candelabra
All perfect in their individual ways, but by no means interchangeable or comparable.
Celebrate diversity!
Having said that, however - I love The Who, but cannot stand Keith Moon..... sorry.

As far as great drummers go,innovators who pushed the limit and brought the instrument to the forefront, that honor goes to 2 drummers:
Buddy Rich
Gene Krupa

Well, what do you think?. I've noticed that many people(mainly hard core Zep fans) proclaim him to be the greatest drummer of all time. I'm a Zep fan and I enjoy Bonham's drumming style a lot. But I tend to have a slight preference to the slightly more polished sounds of guys like Bruford and Peart. But I guess it's all really just a question of personal taste.
What say you all?.
