Avec grand plaisir, mon ami! Do you not remember the terrible Domenech period where the players were scandalized and rebelled ? And before 1998, when Cantona was treated like dirt by the FFF? How about Evra, Anelka and company? Thankfully only the hapless Dutch are a sadder lot!

Unfortunately yes, I remember the Knysna 2010 world cup with the infamous behavior of the French overpaid footballers who didn't even go out of their bus and take their earphones out to say hello to the children who travel a long way to see their team.

Didier Deschamps removed the troublemakers, as he did in 1998 when he was captain, preventing characterial divas Cantona and Ginola from disturbing the French team by playing too personal.

Our 2018 team are young, do not have established superstars such as Messi, Modric or Neymar, but has managed to play and create occasions collectively. So you see, not playing together is not particularly a French attribute Wink

This young generation of champions StarStar makes us forget the international shame brought by the previous thug generation of Anelka, Benzema, Evra, etc..., and their excesses...

Fortunately for the Croatians, I did not bought a third disc Big smile

And for those who wonder, my pseudo has nothing to do with the valorous Croatian captain.

Congrats to France and I hope that any hate they're maybe getting is just gonna turn as a regular old healthy rivalry already 20 years in the making. As someone who is not a football fan, these performances from our team kinda temporarily turned me into one and it's been really inspiring hearing support from world all over for Croatia, and I hope we diversified the pool of great football nations just a bit (when you can't beat them in anything else, I guess football will have to do). Hope we can all share in this kind of ecstasy again in two years or four from wherever you are and I'll be enjoying it from Zagreb.

Entertaining tournament, very entertaining final. The penalty was entirely justified, if you don't keep you hands right next to your body you will risk unjustly blocking the ball, and in that position it really wasn't fair that he could fend off a ball which was going to pass the rest of his body easily and which was gonna land right in front of the goal. I believe he didn't even get a card (?), which is reasonable, but it was definitely a penalty.
And while Croatia showed a lot of energy, they could have shown some better organization in the attacks on a lot of points, and that's where France really beat them.

Re VAR: Griezmann's dive wouldn't have been spotted without it either, and apparently the ref didn't even see Perisic handling the ball, so one may argue that even in that case VAR was an improvement despite the fact that I don't agree with the decision made based on VAR. But this is rather an issue of the (official or individual) interpretation of the rules regarding handball than of VAR as such.

I have always believed that Deschamps was the main man in winning their first Wcup by a country mile . Now he is again the main man in one of the purest TEAM victories in any sport ! Just go down the list of players who shined in playing together, not exactly a French attribute. Deschamps is now a legend . Bravo Didier!

The freekick leading to the first goal was a crystal clear dive and Perisic's movement of the hand seemed to be natural to me, so well done France, you won by two irregular goals.
Great performance by Croatia though who upped their game once more, and France has still a good enough team to be worthy champions except I'd have liked to see them achieving this without cheating.

I doubt it.

None of the instant replay things have hurt the American games at all, and in at least one case, it made it even better.

The real issue with VAR is that FIFA may have committed to it, but most of the referees that were at the WC did not have experiences with any kind of a reply system, to know how to use it efficiently and properly.

Eventually the game has to come up to snuff and date, or it will just become like the BC cartoons ... kicking a stone around, and nothing else matters. The economical and importance of the games these days requires better appreciation for the television ... which is the all seeing EYE that the game is trying hard to ignore altogether. That eye makes the referees and the game look very bad, and FIFA needs to address it so they can improve the game. VAR is not the problem. The folks using it are, since half of them do not want to use it!
what is a BC cartoon?

Actually, there were only four red cards delivered throughout the whole WC ( a modern-day record) and I believe that the VAR is a direct consequence (and the other way around), because the sly-foulers knew they could be directly expelled Clap

Congratulations to France. The pivotal movement was probably the debatable penalty award just before half-time. I'm not even entirely convinced that the free kick which led to France's opening goal was legit either. Great game (despite the scoreline I thought Croatia were the better side.....)

^ not sure what you mean?. I don't believe for a second that VAR has been a failure (it wasn't designed to eliminate the requirement of human judgement)

Very harsh penalty award against Croatia (Yes, there was 'ball to hand' contact but not sure the defender could have avoided this...?)
