Topic: Larks tongues in Aspic Posted: October 31 2005 at 05:05 |
The only KC albums I own are In The Court of the Crimson King, Red and this one, Larks Tongues in Aspic.
I love all three of them and I slighlty prefer their first album but
this album really had an experimental, proggy feeling to it that really
appeals to me.

I voted 'Very Good' since it's not their best album IMO

Still remember the first time i heard it and how it blew my f**king head apart. but that doesent compare to the 8th time i heard it. and that pales in comparison to the last time i heard it. Brilliant, changed the way i look at music and album structure. but with KC it's almost pointless to compare as they released albums that are each their own microcosm. so i guess the reinvention vote!

For me, its their best. Out of some very, very good albums...shame it's the only one with Jamie Muir.

1300 minutes? Ah, if only!!
In all seriousness, I don't find Larks' Tongues Part One repetitive at all. I would call it hypnotic myself. The atmosphere holds me in a tight grip right to the very end and I find myself surrendering to it gladly...

It's a fantastic album. Honestly, I think Bruford's drumming is the highlight.

Yes. King Crimson is one of the most diverse bands in history. Why? It can't be put to words, you'll have to listen for yourself. Even if I wrote a book describing every riff, saxophone line, mellotron passage, every complex percussion pattern, etc... it would be pointless and an awful waste of both, my time, as well as yours. Because, in the end, you'll have to listen to their songs, and judge by what YOU hear. For me, KC so far has been able to morph extremely well throughtout the years and with each subsequent release. And I'm talking about the music, lyrics, concepts and overall approach in general. That's all I'm saying from my part.

Do you guys Pragmatic and El bothy really see a considerable change in style and sounds since "Larkīs" in KCīs discography?. They sure changed, but well, who doesnīt change in a period of 32 years. Those mild changes are nothing but the result of personal and individual changes on FRIPP and the other members in the band as persons, not exactly as musicians. Plus, if the music writen and played under the name of King Crimson were ever changing, youīd have to ask yourselves wether they changed due to their creativity or because their lineup was changing from one album to the next.

I say it could have been better and they knew how to reinvent themselves. The problem is that after this album, they were never able to really reinvent a concept and sound again. Everything from that moment seems to me like the re making of "larkīs" . With "RED" as the better crafted from then. Their 80's output was a remake of this album with more accesible sounds, but that was it. No wonder why they issued Larkīs part 2, 3 ,4 5, 6, etc.....
Also. This album seems to be masterpiece. However, everyone seems to ignore the large amount of filler in this album. Take "Larkīs first part"; the core and true interesting part of itīs long 1300 minutes, lasts for only 3 minutes. The rest of the song is repetitive and not precisely appealing.
"book of saturday" is nice to listen to but itīs not challenging at all. "Exiles" is the same case but this one is overlong for the amount of ideas presented
"Easy money" is somewhat interesting and still canīt manage to grab your attention. It lacks of passion and appealing texture.
"The talking drum" takes 3 minutes to begin and then itīs more an atmosphere theme than a true composition. Interesting on the first listens but pointless after the 5th.
"Larkīs second" may be the better crafted theme here, still, is way too repetitive. Could be better as a 4 minute song.

Larks Tongue in Aspic is what brought King Crimson back into their amazing work, faltering only slightly with Lizard and Islands, both which are great albums, Islands being a chill out album, and Lizard an overall great effort, but lackluster compared to Larks.
