Their debut is brilliant ....Mirage is a classic too...If you want to check some other underrated albums you should listen to Stationary traveller...Nice album if you are into 80s sound....

I have seen that in a library, but I think the covers seemed so dull, I didn't loan it. In such situations, when choosing something from big selection with out depositing money to it, the covers seems to alter my decisions! I checked out "Raindances" from the archives, and it seems musically promising!
Thanks, I'll try it!

Fritha may be my name here but Mirage is the album I prefer. Not that I have anything against The Snow Goose.
I do enjoy Camel quite a bit, especially when in need of relaxing music. Prog-lite it may be in some ways, but there is nothing wrong with a more poppy approach to music if executed well.
I have a hunch that I will soon end up getting the Camel albums with Richard Sinclair's touch on them, as at present I am tracking down his contributions to prog's musical legacy. I love his voice and adore his approach to the bass.

I don't know what all the fuss is about Snow Goose either! It was a huge hit though and brought camel to the attention of many. It was the album before Moonmadness and the one after is Raindances, which I reccommend.

I can advice "Mirage" for starting Camel. That's an incredible exciting album. "Snow Goose" and "Moonmadness" are pretty cool too. Besides, don't forget to listen the first album.
Have a nice journey with Camel..

i feel lucky to have found Mirage and thats how i got into Camel. Its an amazing album, one of my favourites. I recommend you get this, and get hold of moonmadness cos that another masterpiece that should be owned! snow goose is also pretty amazing.
but start with Mirage, you wont regret it!

i strongly disagree. if you can, buy A Live Record. it has the whole album "The Snow Goose" on it with many other great tracks. it may cost a bit more, but it'll save you buying "The Snow Goose" and it gives you a bunch of other great songs. |
And now that it has been reissued with extra live tracks, its even a better buy!!!
Although this new release has the original unused mix of Snow Goose. When originally released the drums were found to be too low in the mix, so they were redone in the studio and remixed with the live tape. This is what appears on the original Live Record.

I would recommend Mirage over Snow Goose. Mirage was their first album and really rocks. Just brilliant. Snow Goose is a concept ablum (bit like Genesis' The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, but with no vocals, and more orchestra-oriented).
Others have mentioned Breathless / Moonmadness / Rain Dances. Worth listening to as well. Last track, Ice, on I can See Your House From Here - brilliant guitar build up and solo. Rest of the album, like Rain Dances and Breathless, is too poppy for my taste.
Hope this helps.

Choose Mirage if you prog with vocals and a (very) light jazz-rock
approach (in the vein of Focus), Snow Goose if you prefer
instrumental, relaxing music. Then proceed with the 1st album
(more rock elements), Moonmadness, Rain Dances etc. Breathless
has good moments but also poppy stuff, same for I Can See Your
House. Tha latter has one of Latimer's best solos on the track Ice,
though

Rain Dances is an excellent album. Retains some of
the jazziness of Mirage, but with R. Sinclar's excellent
vocals.

Dust And Dreams and also Harbour Of Tears are two 90's delicate albums
that are really great! The sound of Andy Latimer is incredible
