The gathering has a guitar oriented sound. This may put you off, but to
me they are like evanesence with much, much better song writing
abilities. Their sound is closer to after forever than nightwish

Let me throw in my opinion as well: Not in the least. There is NO growling, only female vocals. And Anneke doesn't sing in an operatic way. And there are no orchestral elements involved, apart from their acoustic live album.

Check out The Gathering ... they have a very gothic sound, although their lyrics and songwriting are not really gothic. I recommend Mandylion and Nighttime Birds to start with ...
