Topic: Paul Di'anno Maiden thread.... Posted: July 29 2016 at 04:31 |
What puzzles in the game of the comparison between Di'Anno and Dickinson is that, while the songs of the 2 first LPs are written by the same composers of the rest of the repertoire, it sounds like it was written for the voice of Di'Anno: each time I hear Dickinson's take on "Iron Maiden" (the song), it doesn't sound as... adequate as the Di'Anno version.
It reminds me that I really, really should go and listen to Life After Death to have a better "view" on the differences of the two voices...

I couldn't care less about any moral or character flaws any artist might have, by the way. That has zero impact on my opinion of their work. I don't judge Adolf Hitler's paintings any differently just because he was Hitler. I wouldn't judge anyone's work any differently even if they'd committed crimes against me or my family.

Dickinson is my favorite Maiden vocalist, but I love Di'Anno and I like Bayley well enough, too.
The first two albums, the self-titled and Killers, the two with Di'Anno on vocals, are my favorite Maiden albums, though. Not just because of Di'Anno, obviously (since I like Dickinson more), but I just like the tunes and the vibe on them more than anything else they did.
I love them overall, but after the two Di'Anno albums, the next three, Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind and Powerslave, would round out my top five. A couple of the 90s albums, especially, were relatively weak, but they haven't done an album I don't enjoy.
Their career path and their quality arc reminds me a lot of both Saxon and Motorhead, two other NWOBHM bands I love overall.

Nice to see a thread about Maiden here! Well, Paul may not be the greatest singer Maiden ever had, but my favourite album by them happens to be ''Killers'', and my favourite song ''Phantom of the Opera''. Paul had a very distinctive voice that worked perfectly for the early material. ''Murders in the Rue Morgue'', ''Remember Tomorrow'', ''Transylvania'', ''Genghis Khan'', ''Strange World'', ''Purgatory''... Oh man, too many great songs! For some reason, I always thought the guitar riffs were a lot more creative, technical and diverse on these first two albums, and let's not forget the unbelievable drumwork by Clive Burr! Seriously, that man was a machine, much better than Nicko (who's no slouch himself )... I also really like their stuff with Blaze, especially The X Factor, a really, really fine album! I wish people would listen to the non-Bruce albums more, and give them the credit they deserve! But of course, the Bruce era has its fair share of masterpieces, "Somewhere In Time'' being my personal favorite. I can totally see why he is the most popular as a frontman, as he is a superb singer and such a nice guy too. Paul, on the other hand... Doesn't really look like the kind of guy you'd enjoy being around too much, especially these days. But he was very talented, no doubt. Di'Anno Maiden!!! \m/ \m/

That sums it up pretty well for me. I also don't think Maiden becomes truly great with Di'anno as lead singer. Bruce gave them something that Paul never could. I'm not sure we're even talking about Iron Maiden if Bruce never joined the band. I'm not suggesting that Bruce is the be-all or end-all but I think his effect on the band is obvious

Apart from Maiden Japan and a half-hour VHS release I have, nothing else to my knowledge. Man, if you watch a clip of Remember Tomorrow from 1980 that's on the toob, Paul looks like a nerd......an innocent, little nerd, but he does sing well.

@ Raff - was Di'anno abusing women ?? I am aware he's many (unsavoury) things but now this......? CURVEBALL.......... Now I've lost ALL respect for him (not that I'm a model citizen......... ) but this is too much. May he get what he deserves................. Raff, how did you find this out ? |
Well, TBH, I didn't know this myself, but from what I knew of PDA, it doesn't surprise me at all... I mean, I knew he was a low-life, so beating women doesn't sound out of character ==================== BTW, has anything live (full concert, I mean) ever been released as an separate album (no boxset, please) with Di'Anno singing??

Yep, and it's a shame because he was such a wonderful comic even years before the show. His LPs were pure gold and to think the whole time he was drugging and raping women is heartbreaking. He of course deserves whatever punishment he gets, but it's another hero gone. Makes Michael Richards look like a saint.

He would fit Invaders, Run to the Hills or The Prisoner, but I can't imagine him singing Hallowed be thy Name, Children of the Damned or 22 Acacia Avenue as great as Bruce does.

Paul was more aggressive and rough edged. Also sounded great on the few melodic numbers they did on those two albums, where he sounded more understated, uncanny than Bruce. That said, from Piece of Mind onwards, Maiden tailored their music for Bruce's style of singing and I do think something like Aces High would have been out of Paul's range.

I like the debut album, Killers not so much. But my favorite Maiden era is with Bruce, easily, wether it's the 80's or the 2000's, a lot of great material in both. I think few bands in rock have been as consistent as Maiden. SSOASS, Somewhere in Time, TNOTB, Book of Souls, Brave New World, Powerslve, Final Frontier, etc. So many great albums. I do think The X Factor is a really great album, and the live verions of Sign of the Cross or The Clansman with Bruce are terrific. Virtual XI I find mediocre but not bad.

It's obvious why he was booted out of Maiden. But I do prefer his style on the Maiden albums. No doubt Bruce Dickinson is a technically more accomplished singer but he also kind of combines the worst aspects of Dio and David Byron put together so that it's really not my cuppa. Of course Bruce is so energetic live he can hold the attention of a 30000 plus audience and do it night after night. Doesn't look like Paul Di'Anno was really cut out for that.

If his singing style and approach wasn't so 'limited', not to say 'attitude' too, he wouldn't have been booted from Maiden. Things would be very different for him now.

I've just read an article on the relevance of Wagner's anti-Semitism and the controversy around that. The article says Wagner was extremely envious about the Jewish composers of his time and their success which brought him bitterness and as consequence his attack on them and Jewish music. Is that true or just another point of view, I don't know.
