The concept of Hunger Games has great potential, which the movie didn't come close to meeting.  Battle Royale has a disturbing concept that was carried out much better than expected.  Still, neither really floats my boat.

I like to feel the suspense when you're certain you know I am there.....

The royale with cheese is particularly apt since Tarantino loves Battle Royale.

I can understand why someone would hate both of these films, but Battle Royale is not garbage. I think, if, like me, you've lived in Japan, one will get more from it as I think it helps to be familiar with Japanese culture to see how it is a wry cultural statement (and not just a shock and (schlock) fest. That said, I suspect you probably have spent a fair amount of time in Japan. I suspect that it's more nuanced than you think, and I think it has some very good black comedy elements.

I wouldn't put at the level of say, choosing a film from your (Wwich is also sort of my) country, Bliss though (not that they are very comparable).

Excluding the burger, I hate one, and are fairly unengaged by the other....

`Battle Royale' is garbage. A shock concept that has children killing each-other all to a mock classical score pretending to give the film some tragic weight.

`Hunger Games' has a potentially interesting concept, but is fairly dull in its execution, even if Jennifer Lawrence is pretty reliable in the lead, but they sure shouldn't have dragged it out for (essentially) four films. There's great standout little moments in all of them, but certainly not worth watching more than once probably. It still has more substance to it than `Royale' though.

Meh....looks like `Hunger Games' gets my vote.

I'm hungry for a Royale with cheeseLOL (John Travolta you pesky kitten)

Nah I went with Battle Royale. I've watched two of the Hunger Games flicks and they are just a step too far into the superficial teenager universe for me. I get what they're trying to do and it is indeed commendable to base a story such as this around a young female, but the final product feels way too plasticy and disingenuous to me.

Not long ago I finally got around to watching Battle Royale (and Casino Royale for that matter) and of course these two films in the poll have similarities. Which did you prefer?
