Good writing, fine arrangements and performance. In prog rock, the larger the composition the greater the vision required to make sure the bigger works don't lose their way and yet be varied enough to get to the end alright. Cohesive, varied with depth with detail.
Should work on short to long numbers. |

I think everybody has said most of what makes prog not boring.
Forgot a few things however. Great prog is timeless and has a special quality that has transcended down the decades to us.A great album still sounds as great today and is still as relevant as it was when it was first recorded all those years ago.Besides prog contains some of the most beautiful songs and tunes ever recorded in the rock world. |

Because loud music makes me tired. Except for prog. And experimental stuff. And some metal.

For me, the fun of prog music is in all the twists and turns it takes. Like a great movie, many prog records feel like adventures with both a lot of detailed artistry and effort. The complexities are a great reason for a listener to come back multiple times to hear what he or she didn't pick up on before. Mind you, this is coming from a person who also loves simpler genres such as alternative rock and punk (in fact, I prefer both genres to prog). I often like those genres for entirely different reasons, but in my opinion, prog's feeling of adventure and artistry is what made me gravitate to it as one of my favorite genres. Even when it comes to alternative rock, I often choose more artsy bands in the genre such as Smashing Pumpkins or Radiohead.

Most music genres exist because they cannot do what another can. Nor should they. Who would want, say, an ACDC album to sound like the Goldberg variations?
Oh wait. That's porg. Prog. Yes. ;) |

^^ The Mothers of Invention's "Freak Out!" was already in a "freak'''s music collection when "Sgt.Pepper" was released ie. Prog was already born at the time when "Sgt.Peppers" was released. yes, the Beatles were very influential re that English Symphonic rock scene in late 60s / early 70s.
---------
prog, as a music made by "freaks" for "freaks", cant be boring ie. it must be a pitoresque place! Edited by Komandant Shamal - January 03 2016 at 02:31 |

It started when I was a kid when I first listened to The Beatles 'Sgt. Peppers Lonely Heart's Club Band' that led the path to the greatest rock music in the universe; Prog! - Rock music that was intelligent, diverse, and perhaps at times pretentious, but never dull or boring. |

It would be better (at least for me) to listen to prog and porg mutually sometimes.

though I can't say I dislike it per se. it is one thing as I posted earlier that keeps prog from getting boring.. the fans of it. Never a dull moment when you get a bunch of people that think they are more evolved and superior to others all gathered in the same room. |

Good Prog creates new neural connections in my brain. Takes my mind to places I've never been. And since Prog is more complicated then pop, I hear new things in the best prog that I've never heard before, even if I've listened to the music 50 times before. Feels like awe. Outstanding Prog is like a drug.

I have to say I do dislike the intellectual superiority that sometimes comes off prog fans (me included). I like to think it's got more to do with the intensity of focused listening and the personal tastes that need more complexity and variation.

I do like participants who recognize that women listen to prog. Also the comment is spot-on.

Prog is thinking man's (and woman's) music. When music is allowed to just "be" and not feel the constraints of run time or audience (and label) expectations, the results are often thrilling. Great art is never boring.
