I guess I oughta restate the 2 min thing another way. Or ways:
1. A billion albums have been made that couldn't equal the 2 min of She Loves You. They were shipped to oblivion. 2. Every 10 seconds of any great music is great both in itself and in its contribution to the compelling integrity of the whole piece. ...Baby one more time, Go all the way, Mapleleaf rag, Spem in alum. 3. More music after bad music is not listened to. 4. You can write great music. But all the great composers started first in their careers by attempting to concentrate as much musical pleasure andor profundity into as small a space as they could. Time and A Word is a good song. A required stepping stone to the landscape of Close to the Edge. 5. You might need a fellow composer competitor as Lennon needed McCartney, so that you can stop wasting your own time. 6. Yoda : A lot of trial and error in writing music, there is. Errors kept alive, hugged and cherished not to be are. Me: Time spent on further journeys into the mediocre could be better spent on the first 2 minutes of greatness. 7. Don't build up to the best part. Start with it! When people are giving you money, then you can write an intro. Do look at my motivation to assist as the praise andor applause. Yes over time we become better at recognizing quality, and write write write is best plan. You have real talent, as I've said. If you have genius, then you can discern useful criticism ( I should say genuine attempts at helpful steering) from that which gives you nothing, and would rather eat the former than dinner. 🎸 |

This kind of feedback really helps me, thanks a lot! And you're right I guess. What is nice to see is that I develop these things a lot myself by gaining experience in what sounds more sophisticated, and thus I must say that over time things like you say, improve. You can even hear in the album I'm making, that over the course of the album it becomes better (IMO).

Ok I listened to 2 min. On plus side, you have advanced sense of the value of dynamics, even an artistic sense. The chord progression intro had some charm, also a good thing you can't teach.
Now, the first bad flaw was the piano theme, with repeated variations. I use word theme mercifully here. You've really got to have a more Musically complex and compelling phrases. The melody must Surprise, yet be justified in context. The intro itself is really just chords. Melody, even in the form of the guitar starting Close to the Edge, is imperative. For practice and Real composition, I recommend playing something Strange! Then add different experiments to it, till one of them seems to Belong with that Strange thing. Let the creature become what it wants to, Finally, nothing in your neocortex can thru logic or reason tell you what is beautiful, in a woman or music. Opening up your subconscious is the only way to create art. |

A quick listen probably doesn't do justice to a full side. It does sound thought out, but I have some doubts about the guitar work (clearly not your main instrument). I'll have a longer listen some time in the coming days.

I've just completed the first side of my new album, you can hear it here:
To give you an idea of what it represents: It's called City Between Two Seas and the first side is about all different sides of (ordinary) love actually. With sides I mean what different persons feel. First On Earth, an introduction of the whole album. Rose is about someone doubting if (s)he should ask someone. Then Not Me is, well, you guess it, a kind of jealous person who doesn't have the love (s)he'd want, the first part is mad and slowly turns into more sadness. Finally No Coincidence is someone being very happy about that (s)he is being asked and is a reprise of Rose. What I'd like to hear is what you think of it (musically mainly) and especially what I could improve. Any feedback is welcome, I have no idea what it sounds like if you hear it for the first time! Oh yeah almost forgot to say the following: I played all the electric guitar parts myself and almost everything of the bass, the piano and keyboard parts (keys is by far my main instrument) and I sang it. The rest is composed by me and the sounds generated by some software.
