When I first heard Frances the Mute I thought "Wow, that's great!". Strange to say, the positive impression has somehow lessened with repeated listens, but I still think it's a very good album, full of disparate influences and great musicianship. I do agree about the excess of noise, but again someone mentioned the beginnings of Pink Floyd...
Anyway, FtM is not an album you can put on as background music. You have to sit down and LISTEN to it to appreciate it fully. I've not heard Deloused yet, but all the comments I've read so far have intrigued me, so I'm going to go and get it ASAP.

It took more then one listen for me for sure.. Having it in the
background was sort of good as here and there you would pick up on a
particular movement here and there thoughout the CD. Once you are interested though sit down and
have a serious listen!!!! You won't be disappointed!! (Hopefully)

I picked up a copy of Frances this weekend, and I'm not quite sure what
to make of it. I didn't dislike it on first listen, which I
suppose is a good sign, but I think I need to listen to it a few more
times before I can decide.

Frances is a masterpiece. And, everyone has their own opinions. I love the post rock scene. I have both TMV albums as well as Tremulant, Lift your Skinny... and F#A#00 by GY!BE, Agaetis Byrjun and Ba Ba Ti Ki Di Do by Sigur Ros, Happy Songs... by Mogwai, Born Into Trouble... by A Silver Mt. Zion, and The Earth is Not... byt Explosions in the sky. But that stuff isn't for everybody. Even though Agaetis Byrjun may be the most beautiful album on earth, and GY!BE's music transcends this world at points. Mogwai can accomplish the same thing.
Frances I originally had at a 4. I listened a lot to it after that, and I realized that it's actually a full-fledged masterpiece for me. So emotional at points, and the noise doesn't get me.
You simply cannot listen to something once and dismiss it. If I did that, I would not have any ELP, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Yes, Supertramp, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Gentle Giant, etc., in my collection at all.
This is prog rock, people. Not some punk stuff that you can listen to and get at first glance.
You should know that.

I managed to get Deloused and Frances at the same time and for about 2 weeks I listened to either one or the other. The fusion of different cultural music styles, together with the ability to mix and sample within the album has created (I think) something special. (Especially with Frances the Mute) Hearing a section of William Burroughs 'Naked Lunch' being read as part of Cassandra Geminni is something I find quite refreshing. I read the quote of "too much noise", I wonder what they were saying about bands like The Pink Floyd when they first started out??

After all the talk in this site i decided to try "Frances the Mute". Well, in 10 days I listened this only one time, because I think this is a confused album that don't go to anywhere... These guys are trying to be inovative, but they lost good songs adding nonsense noises and repetitive excerpts of music...

Maybe it's just because it isn't his taste? Can't say I'm not guilty of throwing away a band after 1 listen (mine was Pain of Salvation, sorry King, but it just didn't grab me.)

I bought the album, like, two weeks after its release, and supremely enjoyed it. The "noises," you spoke of, were made soothing to me.

U sure about that? when I first bought delosed i really didnt like it and was about to sell it on ebay. But after about five listens i fell deeply in love with it And Frances is so much better
Just takes some getting into.
I even like it more than BE

riiiggghhhhtt, forming an opinion on music after 1 listen... All the best music takes a little bit to sink in IMO.
Listen to everyone else and skip the filler, its not needed.
Cassandra gemini took about 15-20 full listens before I really started apreciating it, now its my favorite TMV song.
I personally think deloused is a better album , its easier to digest and there's more content.

Quite happy to say I sold my copy on Ebay and came up almost even....I tried so hard with it, but it simply does not do anything for me. But, hey, we all have different tastes, that is what makes the world go round. Glad you guys enjoy it! Hope the dude I sold mine too does, for that matter...hmmm

Anyone who tells you that Frances The Mute should be listened to as a whole is full of it. It should be listened to one song at a time. Cygnus Vismund Cygnus is one song, the Widow is another, L Via is another, Maria is another, and Cassandra Gemini. It's not one long song called Frances the Mute.

personally, I love this album. however, TMV are definately not for everyone.
I have both albums, but I couldn't find the single Frances The Mute

I love Frances the Mute, and was slightly dissappointed when I listened to De-Loused (It's a good album but a little bland and repetative).

On the Pearl Jam point, I would tend to agree with you. I think Vs is a great record, pretty much on a par with Ten (songs like Rearviewmirror are classic PJ).
