Topic: Overrated rock artist/band No.1 Posted: September 05 2015 at 19:26 |
U2. I might consider them more artistic if they new how to play their instruments.

I've just never seen the point of Marley's music. There, I've said it. Out loud.

^Celebrated way too much is my definition, but it's only mine. Others use the term differently, I'm afraid. And the Beatles will be in a future poll!

As a non-native-speaker I don't really see how to distinguish rate and appreciate so that it makes a real difference.

With all MY knowledge (saying it's not that much) I'd say that at least PF and Yes are really better. And that's just because I don't know more good (prog) bands good enough.
They have far more complexity in their music. Every motive is repeated in sophisticated ways in different layers (which they also have more) and are fully, for the lack of a better way, exploited, making it much longer tracks. Compare it with classical music, as far as I know nothing can beat that. Also for example chord progressions. While The Beatles used the 3-chord standard rock 'n roll sequence pretty often, I don't see that happening with Yes or PF. Way better lyrics. Especcially old Beatles stuff says nothing more than I love you.

I've seen all but Fleetwood Mac live and they all put on tremendous shows, none more heartfelt than Springsteen. But U2 and the Stones shows (in the 80s that is) were worth their weight in gold.

I don't want to hear any of these today (maybe a rare Stones song or old Peter Green era Fleetwood Mac), so to me, all of these are overrrated.

Torn between the Stones and U2. Of course, it depends on how one defines 'overrated.' All the above had their time but I don't think U2 has done much of interest since about 1990 and, for the Stones, 1980. I would call both irrelevant today in terms of ongoing cultural impact. I think Marley had a timeless message in much of his music, and Springsteen still has something he wants to say, thought I'm not particularly into either artist. I'm clueless about Fleetwood Mac.

U2 was far more 'authentic' in the early days. After they became big their stage shows became pretentious imho. Springsteen has always kept it real...whatever you think about his American rock style.

Honestly, I think Bruce Springstreen is one of the most overrated artists of all time.
If not him, U2

Of these I'll say U2. The Boss gets at least some credit for being a good songwriter.
