Topic: Best Best Of Posted: July 03 2016 at 06:55 |
Ah yes, compilation albums. I kind of have a particular interest to these kind of albums, mainly in particular to see what songs fit in the CD (or LP). IMHO, Chronicles, for what it's worth, did a solid job under the 74-minute time limit, though it's far and away their best compilation (Gold gets that honor).

Moodies--the oldest, and best, of these anthologies (except the missing gong at the end of Late Lament!)

And, as an aside, when I listened to this Moodies album, way back in 1986, I was barely 15, I assumed that what I have come to know as a mellotron, well, I was convinced it was an orchestra, so, more fool me, and, the instrument served its purpose well. | I guess with prog bands this is most often the case (I mean, who here would consider Another Brick in the Wall 2 Pink Floyd's best song, or Owner of a Lonely Heart Yes's best, or Lucky Mand ELP's best), but with more mainstream bands I'm not so sure. There are several songs I like from pop bands/artists... but hardly would I consider getting their whole discography to find which are my real favourite tracks from them, so I download the ones I know, or get a greatest hits album (or a live album), and often I'm content with the few songs I find there that I really like (well, sometimes I might end up needing to download the good songs anyway, since often enough they are in an editted form and I would want the complete songs, but at least that's a way of finding which are the songs I will like).

Having a listen to The Moodies one right now (literally acquired it yesterday because of the poll!) and its very good. It funny how good these 90's CD releases are . Superb sound quality but the selection does also flow very nicely especially Disc 2. I put forward ELP The Atlantic Years because it was obviously assembled by someone who understands them and I suspect this is what is good about The Moodies compilation as well.

I am familiar with all these compilations - yes, Moodies is the 'best' one. This is, after all, the album my sister had that turned me on to their music. All the others, I was already listening to the proper albums.

As far as greatest hits albums from prog bands go; the material on any of them will be great, but are the selections going to work well together, or be indicative of a nice swath of the band's history? That's rare.
Classic Yes manages to get a good flow going with a few great tracks from the unofficial big trilogy, plus a nice choice from Going For The One. For a few, it's a classic in its own right. Definitely handled a lot better than the Floyd and Rush collections it's up against in this poll. | Nicely put. And wasn't Classic Yes among the first "Best of" song selections to be remixed, in this case at the Advision studio?

^I don't see it as 'not understanding the music'. I see it as just a collection of great Floyd songs, it's not any different then burning a mix CD of your favorite tracks.

Only the Rush and Moody Blues albums are valid compilations. I choose for Rush.

The Rush one is alright. I'm going with the Moody Blues comp, though. One should have every Rush album, especially from 2112 to Moving Pictures; but I always felt the Moody Blues was best served by a Greatest Hits album. I had this comp as a teenager, and quite enjoyed it. (My favorite prog band is Floyd, and "Collection of Dance Songs" is atrocious, simply an abomination.)

I fully agree with this. Collection of Dance Songs originates from a mind that does not understand the music at all.

Not a big fan of the compilations, unless they include some one-offs. Out of this group, Chronicles stands out as my choice.

I don't have the Moody Blues one but as its winning by a country mile it must be the best. Of the other three I voted Classic Yes because the Floyd one is just pointless and Chronicles has that annoying excerpt from 2112 where it cuts off after part 2 ( whole thing or nothing please).

Why does everyone hate 'Dance Songs'? The name may be a bit misleading, but it has a great selection of songs imo.
