I don't think these guys are what you could call progressive, but I don't think they come much worse looking than them.

![]() I don't give a flying one about ugliness/beauty when it comes to music, but it is always interesting to see how the prog heroes look like today. Gentle Giant's John Weathers (front left) Gary Green (front middle) and Kerry Minnear (front right) with some fans in 2002. Edited by OT Räihälä |

Well, as a woman I have to admit some of these people really look ugly. However, many people are just not photogenic (I'm one of them, and so are many friends of mine) - and I think it's quite mean to make fun of people who don't look their best because they're no longer young. The only way not to get older is to die, and I don't think any of us really relishes the alternative. That said, I've recently seen a pic of Carl Palmer, who at 54 looks much better than he did in his youth. Emerson doesn't look bad either for 60, while Lake was not that good-looking as a young man too. Anyway, the three of them have aged better than John Wetton or David Gilmour, who were dashingly handsome in their youth, and look at them now... |

Actually, this thread is starting to seriously depress me! I don't think about the performer's age (or my age) when going to a classical, jazz, world music or whatever concert, but I must admit that I do when it's rock music. Rock is associated with youth, and I - as a middle aged person myself - do feel slightly, shall we say uneasy, when seeing how old - and out of shape - some of the heroes of my youth are (the same applies to me!). What I would give to be 18 again! |

As this is my debut posting here, I should qualify this contribution... GQ won't be calling ME for any photo shoots any time soon. So here's Nektar circa 2004 in Germany...

What if Prince were a Prog Genius from 1973, prancing about in this knickers and fellating his guitar, while playing incredibly tricky time signatures????? Would you still buy his music? |

I do care a little bit what musicians look like.ie I would find it difficult to take Keith Emerson seriously if he walked on stage just wearing suspenders and a bra! Image plays a small part in prog although I agree that talent and ablity are by far the most important things.
