This is from the OP, 12 years ago. Not much love, aye Captain? Is there such a thing as too much love?

This is the longest appreciation thread ever. Guess there is still much to discuss. Carry on.

My delayed copy has arrived, spun some yesterday after stuffing my face with turkey and all the fixins.

This one will take a few spins to sink in. The 3-LP/2-CD package is excellent, comes in a slipcase with 1 gatefold holding LP1&2 and a single sleeve holding LP3, the CDs come in a plastic sleeve. The gatefold has all the lyrics and other liner notes with different band pictures on back covers.

The pressing quality is stellar, these are done by Optimal Media in Germany who is one of the best IMO, everything I get from them is as perfect as can be with no surface issues no noise at all, a flea fart makes louder noise than what I hear in between tracks.
The mix and mastering is very good to really really good, I can't say excellent as Roine still is not at a Steven Wilson, Bernie Grundman or Kevin Gray level. He's still doing a bit too much digital processing, but so far these records sound fantastic.

I really like side II so far, side I I'm hearing some Queen type rhythm guitar work..........but as stated I need several more spins to let it all soak in.

So far I'm very pleased with the direction of the music, more of what I've come to expect from The Flower Kings.

I'm pretty much in love with this album, not enough to marry it though LOL. I think it's spectacular, really diggin the funkiness, jazziness of this album and very much enjoy the shorter song structures. The guitar solo on Fool's Gold is cool, and that synth in the background.

This might take over Adam & Eve as my fav TFK albums......holy krappola I didnt just say that Shocked!!

TFK rule.

Yeah, I'm quite happy with this one.  I didn't really care much for the last 3 (though they all had some good stuff and I enjoyed them, just didn't think they were up to TFK usual standards overall), so this was a nice surprise for me.

I still miss the epics, but I think they managed to nail it here without including any and a lot of the shorter instrumental stuff seems pretty epic even though it isn't long.

I bought my first Flower Kings CDs in a store called Black Planet in Toronto, Ontario. I live in Pennsylvania and had a couple of friends that went up to Toronto semiannually, so I tagged along and found this store. The Canadian exchange rates were great back in 2000. So, I bought Back in the World of Adventures, Flower Power, and Édition Limitée Québec. I don't remember the price I bought these at. I still have them.

Black Planet was also the North American distributor for releases from Si-Wan Records in South Korea. Si-Wan was noted for finding obscure stuff on vinyl and reissuing it on CD. I believe they folded later in the decade. Not sure when Black Planet closed. I haven't been in Canada since 2001.

Si-Wan released a ton of stuff without the permission of the intellectual property owners, and did not pay the artists whose stuff they released.  So I always avoided them, though I think I may have 1 or 2 CD's by them because there were simply no other options back in the very early 2000's.

So weird thing.  Found the original receipt (a txt file) from my first ever TFK albums purchase.

FLOWER KINGS RETROPOLIS $18 STARDUST WE ARE (2 CD) $25 2-5 ITEMS $3.50 Total amount: $46.50

Bought from Synphonic music on 5/4/1999

Crazy I still have it but brings back good memories of the first time hearing those albums.

That's cool.....Do you still have the CDs?

I do.  Still the same copies I bought 22 years ago (roughly).  They still play just fine, though I've ripped them to my PC a long time ago and mostly listen to the digital versions.  I do though occasionally play them in my car, which has a CD player.
Must be an ancient car....LOL
I have a CD in my car and it is a 2019 lease.  I think it might be one of the last vehicles to come with a CD player.  In my old truck I bought a new stereo with bluetooth connectivity so that I could bring that one into the 21st century, but I made sure that that had a CD player too.  I'm not sure what I am going to due when the lease is up at the end of this year.  I am not looking forward to getting a vehicle without a CD Player.  I don't mind listening to music off of the phone, but when I have the physical media I like to make use out of it from time to time.
The car I have now, which is a business car lease has BT but what I like better than that and CD is it has USB input. So I have a 64GB thumb drive that can hold probably 5,000 songs, depending on file size. But anything 320kbps mp3/wma sounds perfectly fine in a car.
The thumb drive is like $9.00, might as well be free....What I found was my car system does not work with exFAT drives only FAT32, so I had to convert it, easy peasy....I go on long business trips and simply shuffle play, no swapping CDs or anything.
Boom!

My car is a 2013 Subaru.  It's got the CD player, and it also has a USB input for playing music that way.  I'm not sure about BT, though I guess I can connect my phone to it so probably has BT (I've never tried).

On a positive perception about rediscovering the first time situation again. For me happens when ever. I listen to an album.

^ About halfway through my first listen of the epic, this music is just so cozy and warm, I love the nostalgic 90s sound of it. Good stuff so far!

Ok so Islands was of course my AOTY, i'm going to try to listen to a new TFK album every 2 days. I'm setting aside two days because god damn these things are long. Today is Flower Power, next will be Banks of Eden which i've heard once. Everything else will be brand new to me! Will hopefully stick to this and update as I go along.

Indeed! Loved this album so much when it came out, a great piece of work from start to finish. For some reasons I haven't listen to them in a long time so I got to fix this asap. Good thing they released a new album in 2020!
