For me, it was more Megadeth than Metallica. I really like Metallica, but love Megadeth really. It took me a little while to get into the classic/more symphonic prog, but it came eventually, and I still love it. And indeed, Opeth just kick major butt. |

I got into Yes and Metallica at about the same time. That's why when DT first came on the scene they were such a revelation, definitely something I had not heard before (sorry, but Queensryche as a father of "prog metal" is a joke).

For me, all prog came easily to me. My parents sometimes listen to odd jazz not too far from Henry Cow and some other bands.

I used to listen to a LOT of metal before I started listening to prog (yes, I went through a Metallica phase like most people these days), so Opeth was one of those bands that I had no problem getting into. Most of the classic/more symphonic prog is what took me some time to get used to. The more aggressive stuff on the other hand came easily. |

Nice (except the whole parents liking 80s pop and ghey classic rock) I've been into heavy metal since, probably about 1999 or 2000. I just can't get it out my system, I know I'll always love metal. Don't listen to as much nowadays, but I guess I got to expand my taste to more Prog metal and Tech/Extreme Prog metal thanks to PA and suggestions from other people Edited by HughesJB4 - August 20 2008 at 22:20 |

My parents had me listen to classical music when I was a baby. Today though, they don't listen to music that's much better than "classic rock" or straight up 80s pop. Alex was kind enough to introduce me to prog off of a "Hey, I see you like Kansas" conversation and gave me a few Yes albums to listen to. The rest, as they say, is history. |

I'm definitely getting that when I have kids someday. I'll just have to convince my future wife that it's ok... |

I actually really wish my parents had got me into that. My mum is not musically inclined at all, but my father used to play a lot of classical guitar. At least he got me into Yes, Pink Floyd, some Genesis and Focus. He liked some classical guitar stuff as well, but for the most part he wasn't huge on classical really. |

True. I guess I'm just blessed not having to live with that problem. |

My parents started me early with classical and jazz. Prog may be a bit harder...
