Not "Bitch-slapped by a Bald Bassist"?

If Tony Levin was on the album as well there could be a bald bassist bitch fight - I'm sure there's a website devoted to that particular niche interest somewhere (probably in Germany or Japan).

For the record, that was not serious.

I've had that nightmare, Melissa. The thing is, Phil Collins was the background music, not Univers Zero.

U Totem's s/t album is in my opinion one of the best albums I've heard.
Fabulous compositions and arrangements, brilliantly layered.
Well, I won't go too much into it, you can read the review I wrote for it.
Anyway, I think it's a must for any avant-rock fan! |
YES! I agree absolutely. I was going to reply similarly, but wanted to see if anyone else would herald U Totem's S/T as the brilliant masterpiece that it is!!!!!
|
I utterly concur!

This has to be one of the best one sentence reviews I've ever read.

Sounds good, but since I have Caution Radiation on the digipak CD (with a horribly translated liner notes!), it would make sense to just buy the other three separately.

Depends on the price (obviously). I was able to pick up this compilation for $50; one wonders if you wouldn't spend more than that trying to acquire the albums separately. Maybe you found a better source for them then I did, though. I love compilations that include full albums, though, it can be such a great value - for example I spent $30 on the National Health Complete, where I'm pretty sure I couldn't have acquired the albums separately for $10/ea. (or even the first two for $15/ea.). edit: of course, another consideration is if you enjoy having the proper separate physical albums/CDs (for instance, this Area box randomizes song order across the 3 CDs instead of going album by album)...doesn't bother me that I don't, but I could see how others might feel differently.

I think you may enjoy Pascal Comelade as well, he also likes toy instruments, as do Etron Fou Leloublan.
Comelade also is hugely influenced by Robert Wyatt and has done many covers of his works.
Etron Fou however are a wee bit more menacing but not in a bad way, in a fun one. It's just their debut is... well, not easy on the ears. They get more listenable with their second album.
But yes, you need Ahvak.
It is Present-influenced but it's smartly composed, never gets dull and there's one particular section that just impresses me every time.
Althought having said that, I've since heard White Zombie do something similar.

This Marcoeur stuff is... I actually can't think of a word. Kind of... musical ADD. Imagine about three different weird dreams flashing through your mind all at once, at least one of them involving kitchen implements being abused horribly and French people shouting at you. Also, the sound of the recording is not 1970s-sounding at all. Has a precise, analytical, crisp feel. Does that make sense??!! It's fun!

Present gave me a mental image of elegant vampires.

I enjoy Present a lot, but Univers Zero's music is truly transcendent... to me at least (and others, I'd imagine). They are unique in the fact that, depending on my mood and the time of day night, their music can either totally creep me out or not at all, but no matter what it brings about true cerebral and musical bliss, albeit a much darker bliss than anything else.
|
I just know UZ is going to grow on me*. One of those things that needs to be heard a few times before you completely 'get' it, maybe...
So far I find I have to be in the mood for it - not so much being in the mood to hear something 'dark' (I never thought I'd like dark music, but it seems I do, regardless of mood...), more like wanting to hear something unapologetically complicated. I have to get my ear in! Present is more immediate to me, more spacious/less crammed with detail...
(*Like mould on damp plaster. )
|
Funny, it's similar with me and my ears...
