I don't mind DT's music so much but LaBrie is like NOOO. Esp when he croons Oooo at the start of Another Day.
I agree heartily with Booba on Bent Knee. Amazing band!

Unusual opinions for round here...
- I love Dream Theater, and The Astonishing is a stunning album. - This, now, is prog's real Golden Age.

Oh, so many interestin posts!
![]() Here are my 2 cents... Agree with one fellow progger here that No Earthly Conection is the all time best Wakeman's solo album and one of the all time best classic sympho prog albums. SGT Pepper is an important milestone, but musically is not as good as Abbey Road or White ALbum. Never considered Wakeman's Six Wives as his best and never really liked it. Never cared too much about The Wall: too long, too many fillers. Lizard is my all time fav Crimson, their peak, IMHO. I find most of those endless issues/reissues of KC live bootlegs worthless. Many call Duke the last Genesis prog album. Tried many times, but never liked it: thin sound, poppy songs. I always hated Lasse Holie artwork, design and videos. It's horrible, IMHO, tasteless and ugly. I hated it since the artwork of In Abcentia. I think that partially "thanks" to his ugly artworks Porcupine Tree didn't break into mainstream big time, as they deserved. I know that Steven loves it, but I still prefer pre-Holie album design! Never understood the hype about Riverside. Not bad, but nothing really special. Saw Blackwater Park on very top positions of many lists of the best prog metal albums. Some even say it's the best. I think it's ok, but not even in top 20. Three last Opeth albums are much better, IMHO. Siberian Khatru is my fav Yes song, and its best version is on Keys of Ascension. I think Drama was the real drama for Yes. This is the only Yes album I never owned (along with others w/out Anderson). I don't think Yes can exists w/out the pair of Anderson/Squire. They are the core that define Yes. I quite like many neo-prog bands, but never dug IQ, except of a few songs. Bent Knee is the best prog band in America now. |

OK! 10 to get started with:
1) Robert Fripp is absurdly overrated as a guitarist. 2) Prog does not constantly have to progress: the original term was simply coined to describe non-commercial (ie not chart) music with a high level of musicianship. 3) At least as much good prog has been made since 1983 (the birth of neo-prog) as was made up to that time. 4) Neo-prog is not a separate genre. 5) Jon Anderson has one of the most annoying voices in prog. 6) James Labrie has the other. 7) Dream Theater are instrumentally the most gifted band around but lack any compositional skill whatsoever. 8) Genesis from And Then There Were Three onwards would be quite enjoyable if you hadn't heard anything before that. 9) Ian Anderson is a pretty terrible flute player. 10) Geddy Lee of Rush and Burke Shelley of Budgie are actually the same person. |

I think Neal Morse's solo albums are way better than anything Spock's Beard ever did.

Some days I feel like the best album from the 70's is "Melos" by Cervello, and other days I feel like it is Darwin by Banco.

^I remember when returning from a year abroad in England to my college in upstate New York, I brought along some albums I had purchased when abroad. The student in the room next to me came by one day and said (after listening to what I was playing) "You have such unusual taste in music!"
I was listening to the Police's Regatta de Blanc. I guess it's all a matter of context.

The in-a-row combo of Clock Out, Timing X, and Wiggly World off Devo's Duty Now for the Future always seemed to me an homage to the sounds of Keith Emerson/ELP.

"Angry Eyes" is just an awesome jazz-rock trip to begin with. For me it's the #1 classic "song you love by a band you don't otherwise care for." And yes, that extended live version is terrific. I'll have to check out the live version of "Vahevala" now. I vaguely know the song itself but all I can remember is the "Vahevala, homeward sail away" refrain.

Two songs on Loggins and Messina's live On Stage album, Angry Eyes and Vahevala, have extended sections of musical experimentation that lend themselves to a somewhat proggy sound. Rather enjoyable and highly recommended.
