My real problem is with the cover up. Yes, priests have abused children. Civilian people also do it. But when civilian people get caught, they're thrown in the can and their lives ruined forever. But in the church, Ratzinger has covered up the wrong doings of some of his men... I just can't believe this is the guy that is supposed to be the vicar of god on Earth... Both he and the priests should be held responsible just as if they were any other men...

it really is a shame Chris... ..   the Church could do so much good in the world... but instead has added so much misery and if not offset.. at least overshadowed all the good it still does.

Should this pope suffer any consequences? Why do civilians go to jail the minute they're known to be pedophiles, yet priests are exonerated (or, at best, defrocked)? Do priests have a licence to be pedophiles?

They should be publicly executed or better still handed over to the worst criminals in jail to deal with. Why would any God allow his servants to get away with this? Shame on them all regardless of rankDead

I think what I said was clear.  If you want to bring down the entire Church and the faith traditions of the millions involved, which is the Church, or if you are happy to see them go down, based on the actions of a vast minority of people, my comments would apply to you.  If not, they don't.

I get you don't worry. And that's why I'm calling them a bunch of hypocrites. How can others not know that this sh*t is going on that's what escapes me. And it keeps happening over and over. We don't have any children but I have young nieces and nephews and if anything like that happened to them I don't know how I would react.

Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt I had to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints. For certain men whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.

I would have to agree that a whole institution should not be blamed for this but it's difficult when so much trust is accorded to these men. Recently a high ranking Canadian Air Force officer was arrested for 4 brutal rapes in which two of his victims were murdered. He was the bloody base commander of CFB Trenton where most of the Canadian Force's transport fleet is based. I flew with both the Canadian and Australian air forces and simply could not believe this. I had to get together for a few beers with an old flying buddy for some reassurance. He managed to convince me that we were not of the same ilk of this monster. I thought back to all the chaplains who we would take up for familiarization flights. Some of them would even join us in the mess. they were solid and unbiased human beings.

It's very difficult though to grasp or fathom that something that is supposedly so sacred can turn so evil. How can someone be forgiven for such a hienous sin. This for me goes beyond sinning. They should be thrown in jail in the general population and let the traditional crimminals like murderers, bank robbers and fraudsters take care of them. I think one of these guys was a bloody Bishop. I don't dwell too much when I see these stories in the paper. I dunno the whole world is going crazy. Maybe I'll go and live in the bush with the wolves.

Just in case i wasn't clear in my post... what i was saying is that the Church is more concerned with defending its reputation than it is with defending children. I'm not saying to Hell with the children, I was trying to reflect the attitude of those responsible for coveing-up the abuse.

Yes, I agree that the Protestant church (Anglicans, it is called over here) also have their own problems. I took one of their newspapers to court once. They argued that my lawsuit against them was an attack from the Devil. Hence; I was possessed for claiming money from them. The court disagreed. But I am still bitter about their dishonesty.

I am in general disgusted by those who does not practice what they preach. How can they have any moral rights to teach us how to live our lives ? They don't. Hence the empty churches.

^ This isn't about religion as such, its more about a large institution misguidedly trying to cover its own a**... and to Hell with the children.

Two words : Firing squad.

Children are precious. This is why I find it difficult to believe in God. I agree with the late George Carlin. Religion is the biggest hypocritical scam going. It's outdated. My father was deeply religious and gave me a choice when I was young Sunday school or Hockey practice.. I took the latter. There's my two cents.
Wonder where Mike ( Mr Progfreak )  is when we need him. I also wonder how long it will take for thisthread to be shot down.

At the same time, lawyers and those who hate the Church are loving this, and using it to perpetuate their own self interest, which is disgusting in its own way.  For every foul act committed by a priest, the Catholic church has 100,000 little  acts of compassion and selflessness, given from nuns and priests, church members, to each other, enriching each others spiritual lives and daily lives.  Much more good than bad if you look at the net result.

Abuse of children is obscene, to attempt to cover it up is evil. Ergo some within the Church are evil.

Australia, America, Ireland... today I read that there are cases in Germany and Austria as well. Clearly the Catholic Church has lost credibility, as well as countless members. The Archbishop's comments are therefore largely redundant. I don't question the Archbishop's human rights... I question the decision of the leader of one faith to attack another. Glass houses...

Those priests are sh*t, sorry for the word but i have no respect for them, if the Pope has covered that proble is for one reason, he has also participated....so needless to say, I would condemn them to death penalty. They have no right to do that to inocent children.
