So it's part tech/extreme and part amazing heavy fusion, but the new Lye By Mistake is killer!  Fea Jur is probably tied for best instrumental heavy fusion album of the year (for me).  The other being the Exivious s/t.

I think this is a good point: song form is what defines progressive rock, and song form + melodic shape and the interplay between the two is what defines classical, which even more than jazz is the influence on progressive rock.

Two useful links: the first is an essay on metal's "narrative" compositional form, the second a description of melody in classical and metal.

With that light in mind, I'd call these the most progressive metal releases:

Gorguts - Obscura
Demilich - Nespithe
Incantation - Onward to Golgotha
Burzum - Burzum/Aske

There's also a wide range of stuff derived from light prog (think: Rush) like Voivod, Supuration, and Obliveon.

I really like it! I think it is definitely one of their best albums actually. I've discovered them fairly recently (about 2 months ago), and I already have purchased their entire discography.

@ Jody:

I think with the new Gwenybleidd album a reconsideration might be in place, but we'll know more when it's out.

Also, to add to my other post form above, what do you think of these guys

They have an album coming out in October. They previously released an EP called Amaranthine.

I have that EP Assaf,it's pretty good.Looking forward to the new album!

I proposed them to the PMT like last year.I think they were rejected.

I'll add all your recommendations to the PMT chart later today, and I thank you very much for making them.

Please remember that the PMT has a ton of suggested bands and a lot to vote on and clear. It takes awhile, but I promise you your suggestions don't fall on deaf ears.Plus out of a 6 man team only like 3 people do any actual work so that makes it tougher.

Egoist is already in the archives.

What about the others listed above?  They should be in the archives as well!
