Yup, the notion that a group like Rush never used a mellotron, or even mandolin and bouzouki, is down to unfamiliarly with an a artist that's not one of their favorites.

OK, guilty as charged!  I need to listen more deeply.  Good conversation by the way!!

Your kidding right?? You have heard La Villa before or at least heard people talk about it.....no way I am calling your bluff bro!!

Never heard it once.  Back when that song was out, I was a gigging bassist in Tulsa, Oklahoma....the "Tony Levin of Tulsa."  I played with Bob Fripp's amazing Guitar Craft student Lon Jones and his band "CAVU," and also sat in with a bunch of bands.

I don't tend to sit around and just listen to stuff, I did that in college (73-77).  Most of what I know from Rush is their AOR catalog = "Tom Sawyer" and stuff like that.

I also really liked their message in "Closer to the Heart," we could use some of that in the Middle East.

Peace, Brother!  I'd post some of my own music stuff, but as a sideman, I'd need copyright permission.  The 80s were a trip!

I kind of had an inkling that somebody like you coming on so strongly with an opinion about Rush must have not heard some of their songs.  Give a listen to songs like Natural Science.  Even Trees is kinda mini-prog.  I mean it's really short but it does go through lots of transitions compared to, say, a pure hard rock/heavy metal act of their time.

Haven't read the whole thread so if this has been said, then ignore but Rush has used the mellotron on some songs
which ones?

Note, that I had inserted the "laughing face" to demonstrate that I was being sardonic! LOL

Also, please note that the Mellotron you cited was not OWNED by Rush, but only PLAYED by Geddy.  Big difference.  I said "not having Mellotrons!"

Which I said in my own reply-quote! LOLLOLLOL

And we know "(not) owning it" doesn't really matter, because many bands used equipment they didn't outright own (or own at first) in those days. Keyboard instruments weren't cheap. Still aren't, unless you use a piece o' crap. Wink

Next to the last time I saw them, King Crimson used Mellotron apps on i-Pads, and Bob would trigger Mellotron samples with his synth guitar.  Beyond brillant!  I have the same app on my i-Pad and MacBook Pro.  Bob also had a keyboard & monitor at "mission control," look towards Stage Left.

Screw it, I give up, RUSH IS PROG!!
I'll take that as a yes, it's Fripps.

Well in my case I know the song Tears very well but my aged brain was unable to recall it at the time.
Yes, aging and dementia could also be part of the problem. Wink

14 bowls of dried buds prolly....we all have our moments.
Nah, a bowl of buds is not the cause...what was this thread about again? Wacko
