This is all great fun, but I hope everyone knows that in reality most of these 'bands' would be rubbish. A great band is a chemistry that can't be manufactured. Some very ordinary musicians have made great bands, and the reverse is also true.

We've had experiments at perfect lineups already. They didn't work out too well...
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

The perfect line-up is already in place - Trewavas, Portnoy, Morse and Stolt LOL
Or alternately ;  Levin, Portnoy, Rudess, Petrucci...
Well, here's where my imagination runs wild -
Dave Stewart - Organ (and fuzz-box)
              Hellmutt Hattler - Bass
              Reine Fiske - guitar
              Tim Alexander - drums
              with guest vocalist Sonja Kristina.
Anyway, that's one of my 'perfect' line-ups..........

I got a real interesting outsider folk band:

Lead singing: Roger Wootton
Guitarist: John Fahey
Bassist: Maybelle Carter
Backup singing: Leonard Cohen
Lyrics: Leonard Cohen

No drummer. Not necessary.

Now I'll take the game a step farther. Here's a discography for this band.

They'd have no name. Their band name would simply be 'untitled'

The Shadow of the Valley:
Side One:
1 - Summertime (Gershwin) - 3:44
2 - When God had Violence in his Heart (Cohen; Wootton)- 7:13
3 - Love Your Brother (Fahey) - 4:09
Side Two:
4 - Knoxville Girl (traditional) - 3:56
5 - Little Wing (Jimi Hendrix) - 2:14
6 - Dead Drifter Blues (Fahey) - 3:01
7 - Extermination Song (Cohen) - 4:27

The Gospels
Side One:
1 - Mark (Fahey) - 11:19
2 - Matthew (Cohen; Fahey) - 5:08
3 - Luke (Wootton) - 4:59
Side Two:
4 - John (Fahey) - 15:22
5 - Judas Iscariot (Fahey; Wootton; Cohen; Carter) - 1:45

Plow up the Waiting World
Side One:
1 - Anonymous Love Blues (Fahey) - 5:40
2 - Famous Blue Raincoat (Cohen) - 3:46
3 - In a Sentimental Mood (Duke Ellington) - 4:33
4 - Liberation Song (Cohen) - 5:51
Side Two:
5 - Mama Tried (Merle Haggard; re-arranged by John Fahey) - 2:59
6 - Plow up the Waiting World (Maybelle Carter) - 8:18
7 - Diana (Colin Pearson) - 4:17

S/T (Untitled by Untitled)
Side One:
1 - Too Cruel for Words (Fahey; Wootton) - 6:04
2 - The Retribution of Blind Joe Death (Fahey)  - 2:26
3 - Empty Cupboard Blues (Blind Joe Death) - 2:15
4 - Redemption Song (Bob Marley; re-arranged by Wootton) - 3:46
5 - Cain's Fables (Fahey) - 2:12
6 - Cain's Fables II (Fahey) - 2:58
7 - Cain's Fables III (Fahey) - 2:01
Side Two:
8 - Across the Universe (John Lennon) - 3:16
9 - Lost Highway (Hank Williams) - 2:32
10-Master Song (Cohen) - 5:03
11-The Cocaine Hymn (Blind Joe Death) - 3:55

I just thought about another nice one:

- Jon Anderson: Vocals and other instruments as needed.
- Vangelis: Keyboards.
- Mike Oldfield: Guitars and other instruments as needed.
- The choir and drum ensambles used by Oldfield on Omadawn and / or Incantations.

anyone remember that show "sliders," in which the heroes are constantly traveling inter-dimensionally? i remember one episode where they're perusing a record store, and look at a record by the "rolling who" - basically, the stones fronted by dalterey. can u imagine if there *are* other dimensions, in which the floyd recorded 'household objects' or whatever... sigh... i can tell u, if i could travel across dimensions, i'd be collecting records along the way... :-)

probably the best lineup I've come up with. The most exquisite players on the planet all in one band. Wouldn't that be something?

Since you already have Greg Lake as part of the Line-up, I would much rather have him as the Lead Vocals over Gabriel.
