The record company not allowing them is part of the reason.

Some new news for those who have yet to see this

Taken from the Official Dream Theater Website:

"For Immediate Release
April 18, 2011

An Exclusive Look into The Band's Search for a New Drummer

New York, NY: A little more than a month after original drummer Mike Portnoy's sudden departure from Dream Theater, the band held three days of auditions in New York City. Over an amazing and productive three-day period, the band played, jammed and spoke candidly with seven of the world's greatest drummers, learning about them musically, personally and professionally, and assessing the fit of each drummer's incredible chops with the band's trademark prog-rock sound.

Dream Theater have been extremely sensitive to the fact that this is not only a monumental decision in their own lives, but also a critical moment in the lives of DT fans around the world. "The departure of our lifelong bandmate and friend was an unexpected and truly heartbreaking blow," says guitarist John Petrucci. "The fact that as a result of that event we'd be introduced to seven infinitely capable and uniquely talented drummers was heartening."

Dream Theater would like to share with its fans some of the intense process, along with the musical joy, that went into choosing a new drummer. Who is the best fit behind the kit?

Go to Dream Theater's Facebook page on Thursday, 4/21 at 11 AM to sign up for the mailing list and to receive more details about an exclusive and intimate look at the auditions, and to find out exactly when and how the momentous announcement about the band's new lineup will be made. Also on Facebook, fans will be able to find out information about the band's upcoming 2011 World Tour.

For more information regarding DREAM THEATER, please contact Amy Sciarretto in the Roadrunner Records Publicity Department, [email protected], 212.274.7500."

I don't know he's pretty damned good. Not the best though.

Not the best, one of the best. He's up there with some of the greats. Not as good as Peart or Bruford, but pretty damn close. (edit: pertaining to Portnoy, not Lopez)
I don't know, Peart isn't that great to me. But it's an opinion I guess.

So what? Music doesn't always need tasteless fills and arbitrary time signature changes.
Do any fills have taste?

Of course they do. Portnoy's don't though.
I've never heard a drum fill in my life with "taste". Confused

I very much enjoy MP's drumming......To me that was Dream Theater even going back to the early days. I am not one who thinks LaBrie is DT nor do I think Petrucci is DT. For sure their "sounds" can be replaced easily......When I think of DT I think of Portnoy and Myung.

I would enjoy it if MP returned one day....Then I could say Dream Theater is back. Until then I will enjoy MP contributions to Transatlantic, hopefully LTE and looking forward to seeing him with Neal Morse on the T2 tour in May.

Do any fills have taste? And I'm pretty sure the whole band writes those time signatures.

Akerfeldt and Wilson aren't including a drummer in their project?

I'm pretty sure they will; it just won't be Porntoy. They're either gonna play the drum parts themselves or call somebody else to do it.
Thank god MP isn't part of it; he'd probably ruin the project with his growling and boring drumming.

CryCryCryCryCry

As if Portnoy would growl having Akerfeldt in the same band... and as if Akerfeldt would let Portnoy growl... besides, Portnoy has only growled in one song on the whole DT discography, and some people react to it as if he ruined whole albums by growling.

^ I actually agree with Portnoy not being the best drummer for the duo.

MP knows his place when it comes to side projects. This is obviously a SW/MA project, Portnoy would have respected that, for he respects Mikael (and Wilson as far as I know).

Look at Avenged Sevenfold's album. Portnoy contributed almost nothing, aside from a little embellishment on his part here or there.

OSI was supposed to be a collaborative project, but Mike felt it wasn't so as they were writing that first album.

Transatlantic and LTE were also collaborative projects and they worked out well, to the point of both bands having reunions in the last few years.
