There is only one guy I could see replacing him and it is Pat DeLeon formerly of Tiles. I saw this guy in 2005 and he could easily fill in for Portnoy or Neil Pert for that matter. He has all the chops. He has a great stage presence as well and gets along with everyone. I think when he was in Tiles they were selected to open for DT on a Euro tour. Perfect fit.

i might strongly supprt this idea, higham is a great drummer and certainly wouldnt be subtle one for DT.
but i guess this is far from happening

it will have such a huge impact which is only just hitting me, it's like if roger waters left pink floyd in 1979 or geddy lee left rush now its just massive.

I'll say the same thing I said on MMA.... he's irreplaceable.
I'm really shocked by this decision... I don't think Dream Theater will ever be the same without Portnoy.
|
My gut feeling is that he'll be back...it may be 2yrs out....but it is his creation. He asked for a long break and the other boys did not agree, so I think think he has probably been gone for 2-3 months now. Probably has not enjoyed any touring with DT the past year.
Legally speaking....if he has been 100% written out of the Dream Theater (LLC, Company, Corporation...whatever) then maybe I change my mind and he will never be back. More than anything this would be a shock to me. |
I'm hoping that they make an album or two without him and then he returns for good. Dream Theater just isn't Dream Theater without Mike Portnoy.
|
I agree......but lets see what happens in the next 2-3 months.....Holidays are coming up and I bet he is gonna be home with the family for the next 3 months.
But I am also looking forward to new material by DT and Mike.....

I'll fight you for the job, Snow Dog!! In all seriousness, I'm truly shocked and gutted at this news . I can't believe DT would rather lose Mike Portnoy than agree to take a bit of time out - he wasn't just their drummer, he was such a driving force and they'll surely miss his creativity/songwriting. As for a replacement, I can't even think about it - he's irreplaceable!! I only hope that some of the predictions posted on here come true ... that he returns to them after a break. Dream Theater just won't be the same without him .

I don't think Bozzio would be out of the question if he's interested. Mark Zonder certainly has the ability and knows the band well from his Fates Warning days.

Drum stool made for ace drummer Nick Mason
Go for it Nick! |
in all fairness to the man he was absolutely incredible in about 1969-73 period if you check out bootleg and live clips from that period, then he went about 20 years without taking drumming seriously after that not so much
i find the thought of nick mason doing the double bass pedal stuff on the dance of eternity nowadays very funny the last bit of drumming i saw him do was a comic relief recording of all you need is love! |
Yes thats fair.I do have the Pompei DVD as proof. He was decent then for sure. Just couldn't resist the attempt at a cheap laugh |
haha he doesnt make it hard for us to mock him
