Do you actively excercise?  Great music for working out although I admit I don't do that although I should. LOL I would also recommend Maserati. Big smile

One for me is defiantly Van Der Graaf Generator. I've trier several times, in fact I just tried a few minutes ago but it's just not for me. (I know a lot of people on the site love them)

So who is it for you?

You are hereby sentenced to progatory for raising the question. LOL

Gentle Giant: Octopus is the only album I like and even that I do not love.

As a result of the high praise given on this forum, and the realisation that I haven't really given them fair hearing, I decided to re-evaluate the music of Gentle Giant. I said this in the "Albums You've Recently Changed Your Mind On" thread:

An album that I've recently changed my mind on is Gentle Giant - The Power And The Glory. This album was actually my first exposure to Gentle Giant about 20 years ago. I received this album in error after having ordered Octopus. Because Octopus was the recommended album, and it was my intention not to get more than one album, The Power And The Glory had to be returned. Nevertheless, I chose to listen to the album before returning it to get an idea of what to expect from Gentle Giant. I didn't like the album at that time, but hoped that because Octopus was the recommended album, it would be more likely that I would like it. This turned out to be case, but I continued with having that as my only album until quite recently when as a result of the high praise given to Gentle Giant on this forum, I decided to re-evaluate my assessment of Gentle Giant.

It turns out that after listening to The Power And The Glory a number of times, I quite like the album, perhaps even more than Octopus. I think I'm more receptive to The Power And The Glory now because I have a greater familiarity with Gentle Giant music so any strangeness no longer seems strange. Also, I think I was less receptive to The Power And The Glory 20 years ago because I had a motivation to dislike the album so that returning it would be easier. So it would appear that I've not given Gentle Giant a fair hearing, something that I'm currently rectifying.

I disagree somewhat. Their transition was, to a degree, gradual and there was imo not that big of a leap between Lightbulb Sun and In Absentia. There's really only three or maybe four metallish songs on IA. The rest are vintage sounding PT and not too dissimilar to the two before it. There's even some heavy stuff on SD("even less" for example). For me the bigger leap was from Signify to Stupid Dream but even those two have some strong similarities.

Porcupine Tree.

I only have two of their albums, but they are the two most highly rated PT albums on PA each with a rating of 4.25 and each with around 2500 ratings: In Absentia and Fear Of A Blank Planet.

Just doesn't do it for me, but I'll give 'em another chance someday.  I've experienced not liking a certain CD/artist and then years later giving it a try and having a comepletely different experience, so my mind is open.

^ Yeah I definitely wouldn't. There's tons of newer acts that I don't listen to at all and I'm not sweatin it lol. It sounds like you gave them an honest try and they're just not for you, for the reasons that you stated.. which are very valid ones I would say.

The only one I've not heard by Transatlantic is "Kaleidoscope". I have the first two albums. Not overly fond of vocals and too much of the music seems like cookie-cutter prog to me. I know I'm in the minority but what the hell. I have 3,400+ other CDs to listen to so I'm not going to worry.

Hi, have you listen to 'The Whirlwind' yet? Dellinger on here strongly recommended it to me one time, and so I listened to it and I really liked it! I think you would like it too.

Just listened to Shamal all the way through. I liked it. You were right, it sounds a lot different. I really liked Cat in Clark's Shoes. and the rest of the album's good too. Gong back on track for me here.

Wow, I just didn't expect this at all. Gong.. who knew? My newest obsession for sure. This hasn't happened for me with a new band in a long time. Anyway thank you all for your suggestions and Holiday Greetings to you too cstack! And to all of you as well.

Gong... who knew.
Great to hear! I am big psych rock fan and Magick Brother is sure one of the greatest psych albums!! I believe you will have much of great time with Gong in the future (I havenīt heard any bad album from them, not even their side-projects). Definitely you will like at least Camembert Electrique, thatīs also essential album of theirs!

I listened to Camembert Electrique all the way through. I enjoyed it, definitely a good album but... I don't know maybe my expectations are too sky high now with this band. I didn't like it as much as the other 4 that I've listened to so far. I kept waiting for it to 'WOW' me and it didn't it was just 'good.' Maybe on repeated listens I'll like it better, who knows. Can you recommend an album from them for me to listen to next?
Well, there has been talking about Shamal. Maybe you should try that next, itīs quite different, so you will like it or not. But if you want to continue with Allen style, then you can go to the nineties and start for example "Shapeshister". Those later Gong albums are quite equally good, but donīt expect as great albums as those five first. If you want to listen some of their other project albums, Planet Gong`s Live Floating Anarchy 1977 is one of my favorites with itīs really energetic playing.

None. I like all prog. Ok, I'm not a super huge fan of prog metal. I like some of it but I'm picky. Then again to me it's not really prog but more like metal so maybe it doesn't really count.

I think I may have posted this already but I only have one Spock's Beard - Gluttons For Punishment and one Flower Kings album - Stardust We Are.  I've been told I should check out their newest one so you never know I could change my mind. My first Flower Kings song was their cover of Cinema Show on A Fox Lies Down: A Tribute To Genesis. They are OK but I didn't see the need to explore any further. I almost got two Swans albums but stopped with To Be Kind, which I consider good music to slit your wrists to. Tongue I only have a few Beefheart ablums but I can't get into Trout Mask Replica.  I cringe whenever it comes up in my rotation. Love Doc At The Radar Station and Safe As Milk though.

On a side note Fox has an excellent version of In The Beginning by Mother Gong.

Steve Hillage + Egg = Arzachel.
Only one album but great!
I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

Holiday Greetings!  I first heard the LP by Gong, "Expresso," and was blown away by Allan Holdsworth (that was the first time I'd ever heard him play, long before UK etc.).  I also recommend Gong "You" as others have said...I was very fortunate to have seen Gong, featuring Daevid Allen and Blombdido, playing in a small club in Chicago on two consecutive nights!!  Their live "Master Builder" was drop-dead amazing!!

You may also wish to seek out some Steve Hillage solo work, try his seminal LP "Fish Rising."  It has some amazing moments!  Happy Listening!
