How is their stuff? I still haven't heard them.

I like it. They are very much into the Lord of the Rings, which translates into they are a cheesy power metal band with some folk and prog leanings. Definitely wouldn't appeal to your Henry Cow or Tangerine Dream sides, but might appeal to your Dream Theater/Rush sides. |
Hmmm... alright. I'll add them somewhere on the list, probably.

I don't think so either, but "Cheesy" seems to be the term most frequently thrown around for power metal bands, hence my use of the term.

I'm quite neutral when it comes to VdGG. To be honest, I'd probably give most of their albums 3 stars. But it's impossible to review them, since I'm sometimes in the mood to be really immersed by the music on Still Life and Godbluff.
|
You're more partial to them than I am then. Hammill's voice and lyrics come off to me as the opposite of what I look for in music, and the music is quite boring. I'd give all their albums 1 or 2 stars by PA's guidelines. Godbluff is the best one though; that may get 3 if I'm feeling generous.
They're pretty much the biggest disappointment with any band, prog or otherwise, that I've ever fully tried to get into.

and more The music boring? WTF? Hammill's lyrics crap? WTF?

I have no idea why I just responded to all your posts that way, Pat.

I don't think they're that cheesy for being power-prog-metal, rough and edgy instead of blippibloppi and polished. Nice folky touches and symphonic leanings.

Epic fail. It's VdGG's debut you n00b. The Aerosol Grey Machine.

Huh? Jim Morrison wasn't self-indulgent? Really?

Well, not in the conventional/musical sense, I think. The Doors were essentially a roots rock/pop rock/blues rock (at different times) band which brought in half a million psychedelic elements but still kept very much in touch with the visceral essence of rock. I hadn't really thought of them as self-indulgent, for some reason, combining alcohol/drugs with rock music isn't self-indulgent , and The Doors aren't often particularly obtuse or difficult to understand.
|
That's a pretty good argument.
But still, self-indulgent doesn't mean bad.
|
*nods agreement*
Impressions of TAGM listen 2:
- It does sound like a VDGG album, even without the sax, overdubs or organo-massiv.
- The love songs are generally a shade better than the unusual psych ones.
- Despite this, I can remember the second half better than the first half.
- The title track is hilarious
- Ferret & Featherbird is probably the best thing I can remember, but it's still half as good as the one on In Camera.

Best tracks: Giant Squid Octopus Afterwards Orthenthian Street Ferret and Featherbird

If you want something more minimalistic, go with Zeit. Not sure if you'd want that or not though.

Actually, I want more stuff like Ultima Thule. Which reminds me, there's a member on the Bioware forums with the name UltimaThule. I wonder if he's a TD fan?
