I am sorry for writing this bu considering Frank Zappa as a comic musician is a bit, how do i say, strange. He is, may be the most serious man in the entire music history.
He took his music very seriously, but it overall has a mostly comical feel. I don't doubt that he has made some very emotional pieces like "Watermelon in Easter Hay," but most of it just doesn't move me like Univers Zero.
Well, yes, the comical part of Zappa is one of the aspects that made him such a unique genius, I really can't think now of an artist/band that could play such adventurous and complex pieces and yet add humor to it. Maybe one of the reasons why I love Zappa and not much of a fan of other Avant stuff.

The subject matter of many of his songs with vocals was often less than serious - and lyrics do play a part in how serious music is. Plus, Zappa's music has a lot of playful qualities to it. To use another well known song as example, look at "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow" - lyrically and musically, this song has a great sense of humor. Sure, he did some serious stuff as well, but the man had a great sense of humor and displayed it regularly. That display of humor is one of the things that might end up pushing my vote towards Frank...I can't say I'm a huge fan of the type of stuff in songs like Bobby Brown Goes Down, but not everything is quite that perverted.
I'm still not sure though...either band could easily take my vote right about now.

Really don't mind if you sit this one out.

Good post, Jon. For a moment I thought Beebs, due to his newcomer comment, may be one of those people who doesn't consider any artsist/ band born past the 60's worthy of high praise, but then I looked at his reviews list and he focuses on much more modern ones than Univers Zero. I don't know if it was a comment made out of ignorance (I had strange flash that he was mixing up Univers Zero with Thinking Plague but I don't really think that means anything) or maybe he really does think it's a newcomer since UNiver Zero's debut album wasn't until 1977. Maybe for someone weaned on Zappa (and who experienced the classic days of Prog as a teen or adult), a band like Univers Zero is a newcomer. But, again, you've chosen to focus on much later bands in reviews (none in the RIO camp that I can see), so it's not like you're stuck in the early days of progressive rock. I get the feeling you're more into the melodic rock side of music rather than chamber rock (AORish music), anyway, from looking at your reviews.
