As good as Harrison is (and believe me he is very very good) he should not be this far ahead of Portnoy who is one of the very best drummers I've ever heard/seen.  I suspect there's just too much of the anti DT sentiment creeping in here and clouding judgement.  Take away any of the usual peripheral stuff surrounding DT and Portnoy out of the equation and judge them on their abilities please.

Sorry Gav, this just has to be Portnoy.

The poll question is "which is better" but the first post asks "which do you prefer?" (and does so twice).

I agree Portnoy is more skilled, but I much prefer Harrison's smoother style and sound.

I mean, uh...

Portnoy is technically the better drummer, but I much prefer Harrison's style.

Both are fantastic drummers, and up there with my favourites. I will go with Harrison by the slightest hair. His playing is just out of this world. But Portnoy is certainly not far behind. He's incredible.
Hello, mirror. So glad to see you, my friend. It's been a while...

I honestly thought this would be closer. My pick is Portnoy without question. I thought it'd be a more interesting poll than this.

Seconded.  I will actually pass on voting for the two options presented though, both are amazing drummers, but each does their own thing and don't really compare well against each other.

Gavin Harrison has unparalleled groove and feel in the world of modern prog rock.

Mike can play any technical thing that is handed him...but I enjoy Gavin more, and that's what counts.

I prefer Gavin's style over Portnoy's, though obviously Portnoy is also an excellent drummer.
