My closest friends are all prog fans, so are my brother's closest friends. my friends who dont like prog always catch crap from those of us who dont like the crap they like. We all listen to Genesis, Pink Floyd, Opeth, Dream Theater, Jethro Tull, The Mars Volta, etc. Its very nice. Then i have friends who tell me prog sucks, though they listen to stereotypical metal bands or horror punk.

Does anyone here dance to prog? Not trying to be funny- I think prog is, with the odd rare exception, undanceable, stressing its anti-social side.

None of my friends like prog. Well, one of them adores Radiohead, but he refuses to associate them in any way with the prog movement. I argue that 'Well, they are pushing the musical boundaries in ways that 70s prog bands were; and there's a case for the argument that OK Computer is the Dark Side of the Moon of the 90s', but he won't listen! :(
My friends mostly like mainstream rock and classic rock. Zeppelin, Beatles, Who, Pink Floyd (the one old guard prog band it seems to be OK to like). And I like all those bands too. So its OK. But if I try to play some Porcupine Tree or DT, its a lost cause. I think the Tree deserve to be at least as big as Radiohead or Muse are.

(Well, you wanted an argument... I'll just argue for Moshkito's side because I doubt he'll be jumping in here anytime soon) I said you were confusing yourself because you had yourself so convinced it was objective that liking instrumental prowess can not be considered good taste. If Moshkito thinks it is, if that turns him on, then it is. ... Moshkito never even said something like "simple music is looked down upon" in general, or something... but for him, liking DT, for their instrumental skill is good taste... he wasn't even really saying he looks down on simple music. Circles like these? What kind of sh*tty statement is that? I'd say this "circle" is pretty diverse if you ask me, from what I've seen. And prog isn't necessarily the opposite of simple, btw, there are some beautifully simplistic parts in prog tunes. I think you are just sick of this forum, and you've gotten the impression that the people here are just jerk-offs who dismiss anything simplistic, in their eyes, and who have yet to "realize" that "less is more" in music or some sh*t like that... I've gotten sick of it too before... everything in moderation, complexity, simplicity, PA, etc... I have a problem with the separating of prog listeners from "most people". "Most people" is not some group that realizes the over-complexity of prog and therefore dismisses it... they are usually just simple and therefore get off to simpler music (not always, sometimes just musically simpler, which doesn't mean bad). Which isn't to say that prog by definition is better than other (usually simpler) forms of pop music, just the reason why most people like simpler (I've used this word too many times) music more, is because they can't be bothered to think about it too much, for one reason or another. I'd say talent is always a good thing, but it isn't always used right, and not every type of talent is for everyone. But anyway, just my perspective. There's a big underground metal/punk scene, but yeah I didn't come across any natives who had a clue what prog was.

It's great listening to people argue whether the Black Eyed Peas or Beyonce is the best ever. They sure don't know a thing.

None of my friends listen to prog. In fact, I don't think any of them know what I mean when I say progressive rock. Almost all of them listen to popular alternative or alternative metal, some listen to classic rock, and some listen to hip-hop. That, and they're all suckers for Guitar Hero. I have a few friends that are into a lot of really modern screamo/death metal that I can find some crossover interest with in bands like Gojira, Mastodon, and Opeth, but none of them like any of the other prog metal or lighter prog that I listen to.
Being somewhat of a prog elitist, I sit back and chuckle when my friends argue about music, or who's a better guitarist, and similar stuff, when they really don't know a darn thing about music in general, least of all prog. |

I played the alternate version of Sky Moves Sideways yesterday during a riveting game of Mario Party with some of my friends...when I told them we had been listening to the same track for the last 34 or so minutes, the most common response was disbelief.

Most people in parties can't stand a song longer than three minutes.
