Drums and Percussion: Mike Portnoy (what can I do? these two dudes always play together!) (vocal 3)
Bass: Pete Travawas
Guitar: Steve Morse

Congratulations, my friend!  You are aware of the musical genius that is Steve Morse.  Petrucci and Morse would hit it off instantly... Morse is one of Petrucci's main influenes (not just in guitar playing, but also in songwriting!)

Um... they'd sound a lot like Dream Theater... only they'd finally get the respect they deserve.  A guy can dream...

Steve Hackett: Guitar (No singing)
Maynard James Keenan (Tool): Singing
John Wetton: Bass & Singing
Bill Bruford: Drums
Tomas Bodin: keyboards.

Bodin and Hackett would make a good fit as they play with feeling for the song.
Wetton and Bruford - Say no more!
Maynard - Singing would provide the weirdness and passion.

Allomerus. Music with progressive intent.

From the same era, eh?

I won't do the obvious and choose all the great artists from the '70s.

Instead, how about:

Roine Stolt - guitar/vocals

Yogi Lang - vocals/keyboards/guitar

Fred Schendel - keyboards/backing vocals

Dave Meros (I hope that's his name, the Spock's Beard bassist?) bass

Gavin Harrison - drums

And the music? I suspect it would be 24 carat symphonic prog (even though Harrison and Lang don't play in symphonic bands) with some powerful guitar/keyboard interplay and some great epics.Clap
