From what I've heard about it, I think I'd really enjoy it. Although other than Gong, Wyatt, both Hatfield albums, solo Hillage, and occasionally Caravan, I don't have much in the way of Canterbury. It's a genre I really need to dig into. |

By the way, I hate that album you've just listened to. The Suffering is sh*tter than sh*t.

I've only heard Synchestra. I've seen SYL live though. |

That's an amazing record.
If someone was to ask me what prog was. I'd ask them to listen to Khan's Space Shanty. |

Compared to the other three, I would agree. It almost feels like pop metal at times and while I know Devin tends to give his solo albums a lighter and airy feel, that one feels too happy. |

on Heavy Devy. Right now I only have Terria, Ziltoid, and Synchestra (and SYL's Alien) but I really want to expand further. I really like all 4 of them, with Ziltoid probably being my favorite.

Try Circle. They're an interesting band and you may like some of their stuff. They're also a tad hit and miss too though. |

Listening to music (A mix of VDGG, Leonard Cohen, Devin Townsend, Maudlin of the Well, Comus, and various others.) Messing around on here, and then I had to take some documentation to the main office of the college I will be attending in the fall. Reading various things (todays cup of written tea was Kohlberg's six stages of moral development, some random PA reviews, information on addictive personalities and substance abuse, to which I wrote a 4 page paper on. |

I love Yeti... think the vocals have a far-off, bleak, atmospherically foreign feel. I can understand why you wouldn't like them, though. I think Wolf City is a much more focussed effort, but if you don't like the vocals on Yeti, you probably wouldn't like that much more. Pretty much. My issue is more when people agree an album would qualify and then say it's ridiculous for a band to be included, or when folk insist on answering without at all engaging with the subject matter of the thread/support for the suggestion. I don't even mind a 'yeah, I see nothing prog about Love Over Gold' response, but it's kind of frustrating when someone pops along and says something along the lines of, 'Dire Straits, that's ridiculous... how about STING!!!! YOU'RE ALL TRYING TO ADD BANDS JUST BECAUSE YOU LIKE THEM!' without really looking at the arguments in favour of them being added. Again, I'd be fine with and understand them being rejected... but I'd like the possibility of a little reasonable discussion and I'd be happier if I was convinced they were being continually rejected for the right reasons in the future.
That's a very fair point, but I think the problem lies rather in the hazy nature of prog-related - I see it as a sort of place upheld for the sake of completeness - including bands or efforts which are evidently linked to the genre, but can't really be said to have been part of the prog movement, or are simply so oddball in nature that they can't fit into a category here. Hence, LOG would fit perfectly in my conception of what that genre's good for, while I'm not convinced that even the admin team or M@X are 100% certain how inclusive they want that subgenre to be. I don't think we'd lose any credibility by having them listed in prog related, either, as long as there's a clear statement for why they might be included... that said, I think the full discography rule is an understandable source of frustration - it's just better than the alternative.
I think one of the most interesting comments about Close To The Edge is that it is a genuine 20-minute pop song. Not a segue of different songs, not particularly given to wandering solos, though they are in there every now and then, but I think the pop structure still comes through. That's what makes it so unique... don't think anyone else has even tried that... again, a pop structure isn't necessarily preventing a song being prog. About TGOD, bit of a structural/dynamic crib off A Saucerful Of Secrets, according to The Big Mick, and I'm inclined to agree with him. (not at all relevant to Dire Straits really, though, to be fair, I think prog was in itself an extension of rock... also, jamming/soloing isn't really necessarily 'not prog'... I think you only need to put on a Hawkwind or AD II or Caravan album to see that... maybe Atomic Rooster as well). --- To be fair, I think it's unreasonable to expect all suggestions to match the sheer originality and groundbreaking nature of the four or five big 'progressive acts'... they simply can't. I certainly don't think any Marillion album I have would be immune to being called 'essentially a load of rock songs with a bit of art here and there', or equally, say, Uriah Heep's most progressive efforts don't reflect a huge amount of groundbreaking work. Nonetheless, they're both included in relatively 'obvious' progressive rock bands. /I'm not continuing the DS argument in here, btw... just trying to get a couple of relevant things said that would at best muddy and at worst derail the suggestion thread. |

What are friends for? I'd belittle my member if it would cheer you up. Plus, don't expect too much out of me, I've been up for almost 30 hours, and am a bit incongruous. |
