It isn't bad at all. I don't hate it.
It's just not prog.

I think FOABP is a fun little record.
And PT was the last gig I attended and I really enjoyed it.

It's not really offensive, though the lyrics/vocals/concept are an unusually bad effort to be relevant, just there is not a moment of it that stands out as good. My Ashes and the title track I can remember, but I don't actually like either of them.

I'm not too big on the lyrics either, but I never pay attention to lyrics with Porcupine Tree; they're irrelevant to me.
I can see how you wouldn't like it, but I thought it was pretty good. Not sure if it was my favorite though, but Anesthetize is definitely their best track IMO.

mm. I wouldn't care about the lyrics if he wasn't obviously stressing them so much, same thing with Scenes From A Memory Metropolis - lyrics only matter to me much if they're good (e.g. Bob Dylan) or they really are trying to be important, and in that case I think you need to sympathise with Wilson's old man grumblings to appreciate the non-emphatic nature of the music.
I just can't remember anything happening in that album. Maybe I'll have to give it a few more listens.
|
Yeah, that's understandable. Maybe it'll grow on you, but if it doesn't---I wouldn't be surprised.

Are you saying Opeth isn't prog? Edit: Well 2007 was PT, and I know you can't stand SW, but c'mon. Don't give us this bullsh*t again.

We don't wanna know about that process.

It's quite simple. A bunch of relatively clueless n00bs vote for something that's popular and not-prog because they cannot listen to anything that actually is prog and better.

Those are objective statements though. I'm trying to show you that it can't be objectively quantified.

It's sort of how I'm feeling about it myself.
It's a vast improvement on Deadwing though.
I find Wilson's voice irritating and his lyrics aren't that fabulous either. I much prefer the music but even that doesn't interest me as much as I would like it to.
|
I like some of their earlier stuff. I can't think of many albums where nothing stands out, though... might give it a review one of these days.

It also doesn't help that it sounds like he's singing down a muted megafone.
