Very agreeable I would say. Good to see that people actually enjoy the Phil Collins era. |
It's got me in a little bit of trouble in the past!
Nice to see another connoiseur on the site

To this day, I still have arguments about the merits of Phil Collins with my parents
One of the reasons I started this forum was to see the balance of the PG era versus the PC era. I feel like Phil much too often doesn't get the credit he deserves.

It's a toss up between Nursery Cryme and A Trick of the Tail. I find it impossible to choose one over the other.

Don't worry Infocat, I'm thinking of starting a Facebook page with the name "Eliminate the word overrated from the English language"

Again and I said on other posts about other bands, when somebody says that an album is overrated sounds a bit arrogant, for me it means more or less "All the ones who rate X album high are wrong because I say so"
|
No offense intended! I simply prefer others to Foxtrot. No dig beal.

I fully understand that, and yes, they have lost something after NC and Foxtrot. I remember not being wildly enthusiastic about SEBTP when I heard it for the first time, while Trespass, NC and Foxtrot where blowing me away, so to say. For me personally, though: as years went by I, I started to appreciate SEBTP more and more, because of the matureness of the material and the subtle colorings and shades. These days SEBTP is my favorite Genesis album.

I have a lot of disagreements with MikeinRegalia, but I find this post outstanding:

nspired by the recent Pink Floyd discussion (DSoTM vs. WYWH) I ask: How can any album be "overrated" ... or "underrated"?
Most people simple mean by "overrated" that *in their opinion* the album should have a lower average rating. That's quite presumptuous, as - especially for albums with many reviews/ratings - they're essentially saying that they know better than all the others. They're saying "hey guys, you all submitted wrong ratings!". |
I believe that any album has the recognition it deserves, even if I don't like it, for example I simply can't stand "Lark's Tongues in Aspic" or "In a Glass House", but if both are considered as a masterpieces by so many people with knowledge on this genre, they must have something that I'm unable to discover.
My two cents
Iván

Exactly, I really haven't seen anything about Genesis on here other than topics about the 1971-1975 era. |
It was sarcasm...... West Egg? Is that the Great Gatsby place? |
Yes it is

For the PG era I rank them as follows:
Selling England By The Pound Nursery Cryme Trespass The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway Foxtrot
.... From Genesis to Revelation
Honestly, none are perfect. STBTP has the most "great" songs, but also some of the worst. Foxtrot is overrated.

NC. It's the only Genesis album that deserves the masterpiece status, IMO.

I would say two of them:
1.- Foxtrot: Not a single week track, of course, Watcher of the Skies, Can-Utility and the Coastliners and the epic Supper's Ready are their peak.
2.- Nursery Cryme: Excellent album, probably Musical Box is their best song ever, but Giant Hogweed, Fountain of Salmacis and the sarcastic and dark humor of Harold the Barrell are almost in the same level.
Most people prefer "Selling England by the Pound", but even when still a masterpiece, they had lost that mysterious and haunting atmospheric sound with a dark atmospheres that surrounds as a thick mist that had been their trademark, I love the 5 Gabriel albums (Also ATotT and W&W), but Foxtrot, NC and Trespass, are my favorites by far.
