I don't think he's overrated. He WAS a pretty progressive drummer in the 90s, it's just that in the last few DT albums he fell into a sort of pattern or stuck in his ways. That's why I've enjoyed his work in Transatlantic and Neal Morse's solo albums, the music is different than DT so he gets to do different things, though even then you still know what to expect. Portnoy exclaimed that his work on Neal's upcoming solo album in September contains his best work in a long time, and that is not something MP usually says for any forthcoming album with him on it (DT or otherwise, so we'll see).

I prefer Harrison. They're both technical beasts, but Harrison is just way more interesting.

Gavin by an extremely large margin. Portnoy may be a bit more technically proficient, but Gavin's style and approach to drumming is impeccable.

Gavin Harrison. But George wasn't bad too.

I truly believe that Gavin is a more skilled drummer when it comes to sheer technicality. Portnoy is great and plays, well, fast, but Gavin can maintain a different time signature on every limb of his body. I go with Gavin by a long shot!

and then there was music...

I play drums, I still find Portnoy's parts to be tougher. Especially in Stream of Conciousness and The Dance of Eternity. However, I will admit that Gavin has some quite difficult parts. And yes, I've always though Gavin should try a more unique style. |
Portnoy is more about acrobatics, actual physical difficulty... Harrison is about nuances, little details, tough rhythms... I can bet 293718236 USD I don't have that, put in the situation where both had to play in a jazz band, Harrison would do it in a heartbeat, Portnoy would limit himself to the typical swing ride rhythm...

IMO, Gavin is much more unique than Portnoy... he's pretty original, at least. He has atmospheric and better cymbal work vs Portnoy.

I agree, I really like Gavin and he's a skilled drummer but I think Portnoy wins by a longshot.

I have to say the present score in this poll really surprises me.
As good as Harrison is (and believe me he is very very good) he should not be this far ahead of Portnoy who is one of the very best drummers I've ever heard/seen. I suspect there's just too much of the anti DT sentiment creeping in here and clouding judgement. Take away any of the usual peripheral stuff surrounding DT and Portnoy out of the equation and judge them on their abilities please.
Sorry Gav, this just has to be Portnoy. |
I agree, but oh well. Every forum has its biases.
And whats with everyone asking about Chris Maitland?
