As far as I can ascertain, "underrated" means unpopular, and "overrated" popular..!

Without a doubt it's a fantastic album...I doubt if would have been half as good without Greg lake though.

Maybe you hate it because you like Piper. And seriously, the album really is not what it's cracked up to be by so many. It's treated like a masterpiece by so many when in fact it's just 60s Britpop in most places. I mean, sorry, but drugs do not a genius make.

IQ's 'Tales From The Lush Attic' deserves a mention as well.Starting with a twenty minute track was a bold thing to do in 1983!

ELP wins hands down.
It has the best opening track of all time. It wins just because of
that. The Three Fates is a stunning piece of music and Take a Pebble is
the perfect song.
Asia's debut is pretty good too.

I went with Piper At The Gates Of Dawn since it was the only one on the list I know well, other than Yes (meh) and In The Court...(I am a much bigger fan of the MKII lineup).
Interestingly, my favorite debut album of all time is by King's X (not really prog, more psychedelic groove-metal with Beatles vocals), Out Of The Silent Planet. They are probably my third favorite band of all time after Rush & Floyd.

I was going to patent that joke but realised it is so obvious that some dope-addled hippy probably beat me to it 35 years ago
No offense Jim Garten BTW

Kaztor, what a clever signature pic!
I don't know many of these, but I think Piper is way overrated.
At this time, my favorite debut album is Symphony X...by Symphony X. Yes, the production is bad. Yes, the lead vocalist they had then sounds like a girl. Yet musically, they are much closer to fully-realized than a lot of bands are at that point. I think of that album as a diamond in the rough.

Freak Out is one of the most remarkable debuts of the last 50 years, though it's not really prog. Gentle Giant's debut was also splendid, though there was much better to come.
Am I the only person who thinks that ITCOTCK is overrated and sounds very dated? I like it, but it's not a patch on what was to come.
