I don't think people are as polarized by Rush as the originator states. I used to be a big fan of Rush in the Hemispheres-Moving Pictures days, and used to play bass in a band playing lots of Rush, but got tired of them after the Grace Under Pressure album. I still think their older music is okay, but am not particularly interested in the later stuff. I guess it's a phase people go through, like the way Kiss was once so hugely celebrated, and now they're just another historic rock band.

I love Rush. I have all of their releases except for the latest redone songs. I've been listening to Rush since Junior High School. I'm 39, so that's a long time. The group I hung out with in school were into Rush big time. They were very popular during the late 70's and especially the early 80's in my neck of the woods. Actually, we were probably the minority, since everyone else listened to disco or punk. My favorite release is Hemispheres.

Yeah, Try mid-seventies Pavlov's Dog from USA, St. Louis - man sings almost like ... Edith Piaf... very high and trembling voice... But I like it too :)
sorry for off topic |

I think Rush are awsome and Geddy's voice was probably one of the reasons why. Every band has an indivuidual voice and Geddy is probably the one voice not many people in the world can imitate, unless of course someone does kick you in the nether regions
I loved the guitar riffs, like in by-tor and YYZ, the bass like in tom sawyer and the drumming in almost every song. They are just musically very good. But you do have to get into them heavily to really like them, i'll admit it took me a while. |

Rush started off extremely derivative, but over the years they've developed in some interesting ways. A Farewell To Kings is a great album which I fondly remember hearing as a spotty 15 year old (speaking of which shouldn't Harry Potter be a Rush fan?).

most people probably hate rush because geddy sounds like he's being castrated with a blunt object! caress of steel and 2112 are my two favourites, though they have some of his shreiky-est vocals ever |

It may be because I did not hear any music of Rush until lately; perhaps I would think differently had I experienced them while I grew up, as I did with most of the other prog I listen to. Rush are not very popular in Germany, at least not to my knowledge. While I acknowledge their musical abilities on their instruments, their music does not seem to be very original to me; also it has no really rough edges (and by "rough edges" I don't mean "loud and distorted guitar"). They are just a bit too ordinary for my taste; I prefer something more extravagant. |

I never really liked "The Necromancer" or "I think I'm going bald" (a bit too close to reality these days) but the rest of the album is excellent. Bastille Day, Lakeside Park and the Fountain - all good stuff. I must get that album again some day. Haven't heard it for a while. |

I like Rush and have done since 1976. However, they're nowhere near good enough to be my favourite band. Their studio albums, whilst generally good, come nowhere near their live performances which are phenomenal. And I have never regarded really them as a prog band; more hard rock/metal IMO.
My son does hate them (despite being a bassist and metal fan) and it's Geddy's voice that's the problem. The riffs etc are OK, it's the shrieking that turns him off. |

I must admit that, when my mate bought "All the world's a stage" on spec and we sat down to listen to it, we both said "what the hell?" when Geddy sang the first line of "Bastille Day". We also thought the riff was a bit of a rip-off of Rainbow's "Kill The King". Nevertheless, we both grew to love them pretty quickly. I can see why people wouldn't like Geddy's vocals, but I don't think I've come across anyone who's heard their music and absolutely hates them. |

You havent listened to them enough to talk about cliche. Everyone's entitled to an informed opinion. If Pierre Moerlin had played for them, you'd have said he was on an over-rated musician....hmmm? For a lot of modern bands Rush wrote the book. Maybe if they changed their name to Mother Rush and .............................. |

Rush Rock! Rush Rule! Plus they are British! (Ok I know , not technically coz they come from Canada but canada are still part of the British Commenwealth so technically speaking they are brits, if not honourary brits)

Lee's voice annoys me a bit so I don't pay much attention to Rush. But I recognize that all three band guys are good musicians. I'll add one more 'thing-to-do' in 2006: hear more Rush and try to get into their music. |

Your opinion is totally valid if their music doesn't impact on you emotionally. We are all different, after all. I'm not sure what you mean when you say they reproduce every cliche, though. Are you able to give examples? I'm sure there may be some guitar riffs in their repetoire that are Zep, Who or Purple inspired, but lets be honest the whole genre of prog rock generated it's own cliches after a few years in existence like all musical genres do. Wouldn't you agree? |

It is nothing but a personal opinion, as I always state my personal opinion in here. I don't put a sticker "personal opinion" on my messages. Their music is hollow, it doesn't give me anything; they just about reproduce every possible cliché. So they are overrated, in my opinion. If you are of the opinion they are not overrated, fine.

I usually do not enjoy female vocals, let alone a man that sounds like
a female... When I first heard "The Trees" I thought: "Huh, I thought
Rush was 3 guys, what's this woman doing here?".

So if you dont like a band they are over-rated? The question was about liking or disliking the band. Are you implying that you dislike them because you think they are over-rated? They've been around and top of the tree for thirty years and whilst popularity does not always equate with merit, given the esoteric nature of the world of prog,I think in this case poularity is a sign of merit.
