Well, it's really Cristi's rules for this one...but was going over what we've typically done....So the big no-no was no big hits. And since it's in the non-prog section, no one who's a PA artist.

Thank you for explaining the rules. I think I'll watch from the sidelines and see how it goes. Also, my job is kind of taking over my life at the moment.
I don't know if that song was a big hit or not. It's "Just a Groove" I heard a long time ago and got stuck in my head for 40 years. I guess that qualifies for the "catchy" part. |

Here are some British bands that came up at about the same time to redefine Indie music, and they have some very very addictive stuff, a stunning reservoir of catchiness. It's difficult enough to settle on one song of any of these, so at least I'll play all the bands to you. Foals have at the very least half a dozen insanely catchy songs that shout "nominate me!" at me. Here's Exit. Bombay Bicycle Club - Always Like It Two Door Cinema Club are surely not the leaders of that pack, but I Can Talk is irresistible. Last not least here are the sophisticated and tricky Everything Everything - Spring Sun Winter Dread |

Well ... since we were allowed non-Prog songs ... guilty as charged
The bass really gets popping at the end. Whew!!! I suddenly have an urge to find a roller skating rink. I think the "It's ..." is implied for the name of the song ... if you need one that starts with an "i" That bass harmonic at 4:59 is perfect! Edited by Jaketejas - August 07 2020 at 16:36 |

More thoughts, with some more from George and new additions from Scott and Dr wu23.
George: Tygers of Pan Tang “Hellbound” begins with a riff to
catch the ear, heavy vocals and some flashy guitar playing follow. L.A Guns “Never Enough” Definitely one of the darlings of the L.A.
hair metal scene when I was living/working there, all over KNAC radio. Band-Maid “Thrill” Kind of novelty metal with
their look. Pretty hooky stuff in this
vein. Scott: Slave Raider “Make Some Noise” Definitely more of the hair/glam kind of stuff that was the 80’s scene in LA. Loudness “Crazy Nights” The Japanese spin on glam/heavy metal. Marshall stacks, too! Certainly catchy for that style, on both fronts. Dr wu23: Enter the Haggis “Casualties of Retail” I have heard of them (love the name!) but had never heard them before. Not a fan of haggis itself, but this one is probably going to keep coming back to my mind. Always up for a new Celtic twist. 😊 Shoes “Tomorrow Night” And now for something completely different (than Enter the Haggis). Kind of pop-ish, like the jangly guitars and smooth vocals. Tonio K. “The Funky Western Civilization” More in the vein of the metal/glam stuff previously with a touch of Jerry Lee Lewis goes punk, twangly wangly guitars and saxes. |

I have no idea what this game is, or how it's played. You want catchy? This is one catchy groove:

Somewhat limited contribution this time due to travelling... Tripoli by Pinback. First song I heard of them, best introduction any band could get. These Tears by Nik Kershaw, 80s hit machine still supercatchy in 2012. |

When I realised that I wanted to nominate a Yello track, I still had to choose which one. "Angel No" was one of the choices that I considered. "Oh Yeah" is disqualified by the rules of this poll even though I liked this track before it became well-known. |

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

I don't know any Japanese or Serbian either, but I found the original Serbian lyrics to "Nista". When Google-translating them to English, it looks like this. How correct it is, I can't really tell, but Google Translate is not flawless: It shrinks slowly It nests in thick hair It leaks from the ceiling, drains behind the closet I sink slowly Like it's nothing to me And the world is in front of me for about two to four hours The day has not yet begun It is heard in the voice It can be seen in the movements I would like to swallow everything, everything to stay in me He is hiding in the dark It can be heard from another apartment The world is in front of me for about two to four hours The day has not yet begun Nothing like a man Able to hate others And he is ready to be everything he despises in them Plug your ears And find a reason to love each other If you can Close your eyes And say what you really want To see As for "Katachi", I found this translation: http://lyricstranslate.com/en/katachi-shape.html

I'll start with a few songs from one band that came to mind for me when it comes to catchy, indie pop rockers Imperial Teen. Led by Faith No More keyboardist Roddy Bottum, but not sounding anything like them. They've been around since the mid 90's, having released 6 albums.
You're One From their debut album. Got some decent airplay on the alt rock station where I was in the late 90s. Yoo Hoo From their second album and in the movie Jawbreaker. The video was done in conjunction with the movie with Rose McGowan as her character from the movie. Everything From their fourth album after a five-year break. Album title is "The Hair the TV the Baby and the Band" explains what they did during their break. One band member was a hairdresser, another wrote TV soundtracks, and another had a baby. Out From Inside From their fifth album after another five-year break.

It’s Catchy! Notes
This one, for me, means I haven’t heard it before, and I find my mind
wandering to something about in later on, whether a hooky chorus, vibe or
instrumental hook. Initial thoughts
follow.
Cristi: Sonata Arctica “Cold” Straight ahead-type accessible metal band, decent singer band looks right for this visually. A-ha “Don’t Do Me Any Favours” Has that a-ha sound, certainly, tight pop outfit, with some musical hooks, classic “song” structure. Kingdom Come “Mad Queen” Metal/hard rock band here, another classic structure-type song, but dressed in metal clothes this time. Testament “The Legacy” Starts off darkly heavy, bluesy ballad style song, then grows into harder-edged and some guitar pyrotechnics. Diary of Dreams “Dream of a Ghost” Spooky start, then speeds up with some waves of synth sounds and synth vocals. Feeling of hopelessness in the lyrics, kind of a sci-fi vibe. IRIS “Ploaia de Vise” Straight-ahead rock here from Eastern Europe, sounds like…Hits all the straight-ahead rock notes. Rosu si Negru “Cu fiecare vis” Straight ahead again, Eastern Europe again?
but with a lighter, yet more produced sound than IRIS. Lorenzo: Modena City Ramblers “Il ritorno di Paddy Garcia” A bit of a romp, makes me think of “Poncho & Lefty,” for some reason. RAF “Oggi un Dio Non ho” Pretty ballad-type song, very smooth vocals, nice arrangement. Paola Turci “Volo Cosi” Another ballad, but of a different type, at least to my ear. Builds nicely, very passionate vocal. I prophesy disaster: Yello “Domingo” Heavy electronic sound, pretty ominous sounding to my ear. The repetitive hook of the keys is pretty catchy. Suitkees: De Staat “All is Dull” Liked this beginning, those kinda wonky guitars…these guys are just terminally bored and it’s quite funny. Then “Blues Is Dead” These guys do make me laugh, pretty good novelty stuff. Fay Lovsky “The the Middle, In the Middle” sounds kind of like Doris Day on speed. 😊 Calogero “Je joue de la musique” They are obsessed! This one I like the best of these, although Fay Lovsky was fun, for the novelty aspect. The Dark Elf: The Waterboys “Be My Enemy” Oh, I love The Waterboys. Great song and great band. Young Dubliners “Rocky Road to Dublin” Trad song done as a rocker, another great choice for catchy. This is a great version. Gogol Bordello “Start Wearing Purple” These guys are fun, too. Novelty can certainly be catchy. The Anders: Shugo Tokumaru “Kitachi” Don’t know what they’re singing about, but cute, poppy song. And engaging video. Jarboli “Nista” Again, no idea what the song is about, but there’s a feeling of futility in it to me, the treadmill of daily life, perhaps. TCat: Glassmoon “You Turn My World Around” Enjoyed this one, I agree, in it’s time, should have been a hit song. Eye to Eye “Mermaid Man” Yep, definitely that Steely Dan vibe….and definitely also catchy. Gorillaz “19-2000 (Soulchild Remix). You’ve definitely got an ear for what I think of as catchy, very poppy-catchy, this one. My Morning Jacket “Holding On To Black Metal” Has some cool punctuation by the horns and the verbal choruses are very hooky. Status Quo “Slow Train” Here’s a band I actually saw live! Video link didn’t work for me (odd) but I found an HQ version on YT. I remember this one from back in the day. Geggy Tah “Go” Love the cover. This one just might win for the sheer quirkiness. OK, going to the 80's/90's here, for things I thought should have been way bigger than they were.
First, Loud Sugar with "Instant Karma Coffee House" Second, a relative of The Waterboys, World Party's "All Come True" Rare change of heart, I'm switching my third one to this, Better Than Ezra's "In The Blood" (I'll save the lovely Sam Phillips for another poll)
