Sorry I was off on an adventure yesterday and didn't have time to put up my final decision. It's been a tough one to decide for me, but I finally decided to go with the one that had the most impact on my own life this time around.
Annie Lennox - "Love Theme for a Vampire" from "Interview with a Vampire". Thanks for all of the feedback from everyone. After Shadowyzard's comments, and realizing that what he said about the quality of the sound on the original post I made about that song, I am going to post a better recording of it. I wasn't sure about the original post that it would become my final choice, but I wanted to post that video because of the tie-in with the movie. So below is a video with a better audio quality: |

Interesting that you went with what doesn't come across as a soundtrack per se, in your contemplations. I didn't think of that as a potential for eliminating a piece in this round. In this way, you were absolutely correct that "Women of Ireland," wasn't composed for film originally, but was adapted for this particular film. Your ear certainly caught the distinction.

Okay, I have to get down to adding them very shortly, as I will be busy today. In a couple of cases I'm not sure that that was the final selection (hope there's no disappointment, surprises, or errors), but I had planned to put this up early morning on Thursday, and I will stick with that schedule.
Thanks to all who nominated tracks, have commented on tracks, for the discussion, and for the posts and votes to come. And of course, thanks to Lorenzo for kicking this whole thing off and offering me this opportunity. It's much appreciated. EDIT: Going to want some coffee first, though. ^^ Thanks, Lewian for your comments.
Taking various comments on board, including yours, since I allowed it to be open to change and new suggestions until I put the poll up, which would be later this morning (2:00 am now) if it goes as planned, Morricone is represented and I already got to pay some sort of personal tribute to him, I am going with The Wicker Man' "Willow's Song" option. Oh, and I like diversity/ eclecticism -- I feel that including Willow's Song will create a more diverse sound in the poll listing. If others wish to add or make changes, or if any others haven't confirmed the choice, it's still open for at least another 3 and a half hours (had planned to put the poll options up early morning). Shadowyzard (concentrating on those who posted several things and commented already now): Well here we go again... I guess your love for these is strongly connected to the film? The march part in the Batman Theme works very well, even though the whole thing is very typical soundtrack music in my ears it stirs things up nicely. Similar Conan... I like how well the things you chose go with your avatar though. Tan Dun I like most, very good sound and instrumentation, but as "autonomous music" I miss some development, it seems to go nowhere. Of course they all were composed and chosen as soundtracks, which is fair enough... just based on my criteria they won't make the podium. Zelenhgorm: Interesting, from listening this could easily have been a movie soundtrack, and a good one at that. Surprised that this is from a game (I haven't done video games for ages except football/soccer ones, I've got to admit). Obviously as now I have gone on for long enough about my criteria, you will already know that ultimately this wouldn't have had chances with me either, but there are a few parts (the beginning and what starts 2:20) that I could enjoy well on their own. jamesbaldwin: Double Life of Veronique is a favourite film of mine, which makes it hard to "subtract the film" when listening. However, it is a dramatic and well structured piece that clearly has a life on its own. A contender. The Ballad of Sacco and Vanzetti: The versatility of Morricone is just amazing. I had already almost decided not to vote for him, but I wasn't aware of this, and this is a fascinating song with a fancy arrangement that I could well enjoy a lot on its own. Well, I write I wasn't aware of this, but I'm pretty sure I saw the film or most of it on TV accidentally long ago. I didn't pay enough "autonomous" attention to the soundtrack... I tend to have an integrated perception of films not separating out the music. (My favourite soundtrack music and all my nominations except Rota I discovered as music only.) TINY bit of listening before poll start... BrufordFreak: Good to have you here, and what an entry! Sharp and tense, this is the kind of stuff I like that I think is not normally appreciated enough on PA. Logan: Hmm. This is not going to make myself very popular here but... I have huge respect for Morricone and he properly earned his Maestro title. However, normally when listening to his stuff as "just music", it shouts out to me "I want a film to go with me, that's what I'm made for!" This one in particular, but actually pretty much all of them really. So chances are I'm not going to vote for anything by the Maestro; I will vote for what works best as music for me, trying to disregard the movie and the connection as much as I can. For the same reason it was clear to me that I'd only post the Nino Rota music for Dolce Vita "out of competition" - my love for it is too connected with the film; I don't have the slightest idea whether and how much I'd have appreciated it had I heard it as "just music". Your two alternatives both work much better in my ears. "Willow's song" is so fragile and at the same time confident, magical. And Sexopolis is a very pleasant piece of instrumental music. Snicolette: Romeo and Juliet starts as an autonomous piece of music and I enjoy the first minute a lot, but what comes later again has the same "I am a soundtrack, I want a film to go with me" effect that most Rota and Morricone have to me. It's good music and surely I like to listen to it, but I feel too clearly that I'm missing something essential by just listening. Much less so "Women of Ireland", very relaxing and meditative folk, perfect when I'm in the right mood for it. Eurythmics: I know this one. Very good song and phantastic singer, although I'm not the biggest fan of vocoder sound. I think this would be better if it sounded less electronic. (Did you post two "Julia" things on purpose?)

It's the final countdown
So by my reckoning it's just the following who might not have a final decision -- see my master list towards the end of my long first first post or on page seven (although it's still open to change and new suggestions). TCat micky (updated) Right now this is what I have listed for the question marks: ? TCat: Mark Isham - "Pittsburgh 1901" - Mrs. Soffel (1984) ? micky: Maurice Jarre - "Lara's Theme" - Doctor Zhivago (1965) (or Melancholia if video can be found without country restrictions.*) I won't put up the poll options until early tomorrow morning PDT, like in about 11 or 12 hours. And I'll check back to see if there are any updates on the last page or pages before I set out the poll. I expect to go with those choices above unless told otherwise. * If I chose the Melancholia and this is the correct video, that is Tristan and Isolda by Richard Wagner (classic music) and so would not count as original music for the film (a theme I had known) unless the music is really altered/ re-imagined, in which case I made an exception for that. By the way, in my uberlong post going through the videos HERE I mentioned another Morricone that I thought people might like. I considered changing it to that if it got positive feedback (I adore this): EDIT: Nah, I'll stick with my first instinct. By the way, some might recognise Morricone's "L'arena" from Kill Bill Vol. 2. It is the context of that film that I fell in love with it, and Kill Bill is my favourite Tarantino. Might not want to be soiled or spoiled by watching this scene if you haven't seen Kill Bill. By the way, I wasn't sure if not-me Greg (TheDarkElf) was considering nominating one before. Following are my notes on since Page 5 the additions (plus earlier notes, if applicable) up until Drew's post today.
Cristi: Ennio Morricone - Le Clan des Siciliens (1969) You sure can tell it’s Morricone! What a great signature sound he created. This has the “Italianate,” sound which seems perfect for this film (judging by the title) and I just love his twangy guitars. A contender amongst the Morricone contenders, for me, if you decide this is the one.Tiberiu Olah - Osanda (main theme) – 1976 Very dramatic piece. I couldn’t help but wonder what the story was, so I looked it up. And the music is very fitting. What a storyline! George: Michael Giacchino - "Incredits" - The Incredibles As advertised, very 60’s spy film sound, they did a good job at reimagining that sound. TCat: Mike Annie Lennox - "Love Song for a Vampire" If this had been main contender, it would have won 1st for me. Despite my ironic nature, I have a sweet tooth for love songs. Her stellar voice is just perfect for this piece. Despite my ironic nature, I have a sweet tooth for lush or plaintive love songs. Mix it up with some sort of eternity and. Wow. I prophesy disaster: Morricone Sorriso del Grande Tentatore – Very spooky, not signature Morricone to me, but that doesn’t matter. Sinister and nightmarish, I’m certain very apt for the film. Morricone Una donna da ricordare Again, not to me, anyway, signature style, but this is one of the reasons that he is such a wonderful composer, he really can do anything. This one might become an earworm, I like the melody very much. Logan: Michael Nyman Chasing Sheep is Best Left to Shepherds ~ Very funny piece. I loved how the music even reminded me of sheep, as everyone was struggling to be serious in their overdone wigs and sleeves getting in the way of everything. dr wu Bernard Hermann “Vertigo Theme”: Love Hitchcock films and his television series here in the 50’s and 60’s (mostly as reruns for me). As usual, this piece works perfectly with the film, sinister and a bit understated, leaving something to the imagination. A contender for sure. Have to say how we always tuned in to watch “The Birds,” knowing Bodega Bay so well and loving Daphne du Maurier’s writing. North By Northwest: Another Hitchcock great film and another score by Bernard Hermann. This is much lighter in tone than the previous one, at least initially, it then builds as doubtless suspense will build during the film. Bruford Freak Clint Mansell “Pi” Not sure if this is a contender for me, but the imagery of the video is very disturbingly intriguing (the music does go with it well). The video reminds me very much of seeing NIN’s bigscreen backdrop the time I saw them, lots of time-lapse death and decay on that (funny they should come up twice in this poll). Liquid Sky, such an odd film. Reading up on it, found out that they used a Fairlight to record some of the unusual sounds. One of my previous employers, Geordie Hormel, of Village Recorder fame, was the first dealer of the instrument in the US. Edited by Snicolette - July 08 2020 at 19:52 |

Good one! Hadn't seen this in years. I forgot how good that soundtrack was. My office went to see this as a "field trip" when it first came out as we worked on math textbooks. |

Because of laziness I wrote in Italian, that is Veronica. The original title is in French LA DOUBLE VIE DE VéRONIQUE.

Thought of choosing some of my old favorites like Liquid Sky but I'm going to go with Clint Mansell's amazing soundtrack to the 1998 psychological thriller, Pi. Check this out:

so I'll just flip a coin I guess and go with one... and... Doctor Zhivago it is... and self banning myself from thread until Greg makes it all official hahah. brw.. haven't had a chance to really do listens yet.. I would hope we will have a few days to do that.

I could've done that, but sometimes there comes a different version, I didn't want to take the risk. Also, I was thinking that micky was gonna nominate the alien diva song from The Fifth Element, as it seemed like his decision, so I didn't find it absolutely necessary to listen to Wagner's tune. BTW, it was solved after PM'ing with micky, and I added my comment about that one. Edited by Shadowyzard - July 08 2020 at 18:07 |
