I am pleased with this participation in the discussion I opened: it means that still many people are passionate about these polls.

I would say let's move forward, adjusting the rules from time to time based on the number of people participating. Lewian's attempt to simplify the poll rules did not have a good effect but maybe that depends on other contingent factors. In fact, as Mila pointed out some polls with so many participants were more challenging.

However, I will do the next poll with only one song to propose each, so each person will have a better chance to comment.
Amos Goldberg (professor of Genocide Studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem): Yes, it's genocide. It's so difficult and painful to admit it, but we can no longer avoid this conclusion.

JD, would you like to host the next poll?

Sure why not, I've had a very busy year but I think I can wrangle an idea up.
When do I need to gitt'erdun?

Maybe on Friday? Then we would have the whole weekend to find something that fits your theme. Most of us are rather busy on working days.

^ However, you have to be a bit patient, Christian. Things do not change overnight. As I menioned earlier, previous polls do have an impact on the following polls but rebuilding something usually takes more time. If we continue on your path there is a good chance to turn things around. I think that it would make sense to in additon invite the people who have participated until recently.

I've got to say that I was hoping that my poll could bring back a few people because I thought I make it easier, without fancy voting/proposing mode, also no release data or geographical restrictions (although I didn't explicitly had in mind to avoid these), however it wasn't much of a success if we look at the bare numbers. Which leaves me somewhat clueless about what could be done.

I had a closer look at the polls of the last few months. Here is what I have noticed.

In terms of participation . .

1. editions with an unusual procedure were less popular (voting system; interactive inspiration)

2. release date restrictions seem to be also less popular. However, in this case it is not quite clear whether it was rather about the voting system that went along with the respective polls. There have been successful polls in the past focusing on certain decades, after all. Therefore I think that release date restrictions are ok but they should not be too restrictive.

3. geographic restrictions, that is polls focusing on certain 'foreign' music cultures were less popular (not sure whether it is the same with all cultures)

It could not be determined that other more specific poll themes were necessarily less popular, though.

So in conclusion, it can be stated that the first three categories mentioned above had a clear impact not only on the number of participants in the respective poll but also on the participation of the following editions.

I personally am open to new things but perhaps we would still have to agree on a few points by giving the IA-polls a recognisable format in order to ensure their continuity.

What's your opinion, guys?

I think we could possibly gain some insights from the past editions of this year. In terms of the number of participants, edition 55 hosted by Christian was a highlight. The edition started around the time of the beginning of the war in Ukraine (February 2022). The topic title was: How are you today?

Most participants were regulars at the time (number of participants in total: 16)

Catcher10/José, Cristi, Christian, Dr Wu/Doug, George, Greg, I prophesy disaster, JD, Kees, Lorenzo, Meltdowner/Samuel, Mila, Nick, Nickie, Özgür, tigerfeet/Malcom. Also, Anders stopped by.

The names of the people who have hosted a poll at least once this year, are marked in bold. Nickie and T-Cat/Mike also hosted a poll late last year. Maybe it would make sense to contact them and invite them by pm to join the next poll as soon as the topic is determined?

Btw. the topic and concept of a poll provide information about how someone imagines a poll. In this respect, the polls of those people who have already hosted one, more or less recently but are currently not participating can be a valuable source of information for us imo.

p.s. you forgot to vote in the previous poll, I think. :P

So, dear friends, I think we also missed out on Cristi
(Cristi, if you're there, give us a shout!)
There are only a few of us left, but we are very very fine wine.

I myself apologise for my lack of participation since returning to work (September)

Let's do the count:
-Lorenzo
- Christian
- Kees
- Mila
- George
- Logan

Plus a few not always present, who are added from time to time, but usually do not open polls:
-JD
- Someone else
- Prophesy disaster
-??

I believe we are at a crossroads:
1) we could try to make the polls more palatable to others,

or

2) we could go on like this, few but good,

what do you say?

Amos Goldberg (professor of Genocide Studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem): Yes, it's genocide. It's so difficult and painful to admit it, but we can no longer avoid this conclusion.
