It's kind of boring but other than that I don't really have a problem with it either.

Why do Geddy and Alex dislike "Tai Shan?" Are they jealous of Neil for going to China or something? Wink

Any interview, print back then, they spoke of moving forward and diving into new areas especially with the new wave sounds like The Police that was a huge influence.
So I guess people thought they were lying in interviews back then......sheesh. Rush pretty much said what they did and did what they said. From a performance and recording perspective very little peeling back any onion layers was needed, you didn't have to go "WTH hell were they thinking!!!" That ended with Think I'm Going Bald LOL

LOL

"...Bald" is a true oddity in the Rush catalogue. But they did do it as a joke-response to Kiss's "Goin' Blind" (they were opening for them at the time). Neil coined the title because Alex was obsessed over the possibility of losing his hair later in life.

Either way, I'm glad they never did anything like that again, though other songs like "Anagram (for Mongo)" and "Dog Years" also put forth off-beat topics and showed they liked to have fun, too.

To me that was a bizarre mentality, bolstered by the fact I got into Rush in the '80s (but I had no issue with "pre-synths" Rush when I worked my way backward).

That started with Signals, where everyone felt the guitar took a "backseat" (which I continue to disagree with).

The friend who got me into Rush (he was into them way earlier) even recounted a review where some guy lamented the "new sound" and "longed for the Rush of old"...and it was a review of Moving Pictures

I'm generally quiet about HYF since soooo many feel it is such a weak album. Like all of those I bought on release and simply enjoy that record so much, still do. Back then I found it so fresh of a record, the musicianship quite mature and the lyrics and "feeling" of where these songs come from also very mature.

Tai Shan for me has such a great vibe, I love the melody and sound of it. I also think Geddy's vocals sound fantastic, my main complaint was not too much of a fan of Neil's snare sound, too much echo/reverb I guess. For example on Open Secrets too much air/echo chamber dynamics, it is a 100% digital recording and from 1987, so still trying to figure out that whole digital thing, it sounds great though for a DDD release.

Mission is also a great track......Over all not a bad tune on the album. It does not get enough attention, the height of Rush going thru the electronic/synth era and the height of a lot of displeasure for those that only wanted the prog metal of 2112. Again for me HYF is a very mature sounding Rush record.

For some reason I was just thinking about  a rumor back in the 80's (late 80's) that Neil had cancer. At the time that turned out not to be true but the weird thing is when you fastfoward 30 years or so that's what he died of. Strange. Does anyone else remember that rumor?

Here is your annual reminder that this song appeared on the 1984 album Grace Under Pressure, and they shot a video for it.

Clearly, Neil wasn't done with "sci fi" lyrics (in this case, dystopian SF). Wink

One humanoid escapee
One android on the run
Seeking freedom beneath the lonely desert sun

Trying to change its program
Trying to change the mode, crack the code
Images conflicting into data overload

One zero zero one zero zero one
SOS
One zero zero one zero zero one
In distress
One zero zero one zero zero

Memory banks unloading
Bytes break into bits
Unit One's in trouble and it's scared out of its wits

Guidance systems break down
A struggle to exist
To resist
A pulse of dying power in a clenching plastic fist

One zero zero one zero zero one
SOS
One zero zero one zero zero one
In distress
One zero zero one zero zero

It replays each of the days
A hundred years of routines
Bows its head and prays
To the mother of all machines

However, I can now honestly say that I don't think there are any weak songs on HYF not even "tai shan." Power Windows has some songs (actually same thing with HYF) that I initially thought were kind of weak (like maybe "emotion detector") but I think they have all grown on me. It's interesting how these albums still sound fresh all these years later.

Neil saw the world around him so clearly and was able to put it down so vividly on those two records in particular.  More and more my favorite of his lyrics come from the mid/late 80s.

Yep. Not that the other albums didn't have good or even great lyrics but for me personally that was Neil's peak. I think part of it could have to do with interests. I'm more interested in philosophy, psychology and sociology than I am in mythology or science fiction, otherwise the earlier stuff would probably be more to my liking. So to a degree I think it has to do with what you find interesting.

Porg for short. My love of music doesn't end with prog! Feel free to discuss all sorts of music with me. Odds are I'll give it a chance if I haven't already! :)

I feel Neil flexed lyrically like a beast on Vapor Trails. That will always be their "comeback" for me.

"Freeze" (Yes, I prefer the original mix!)

The city crouches, steaming
In the early morning half light
The sun is still a rumor
And the night is still a threat

Slipping through the dark streets
And the echoes and the shadows
Something stirs behind me
And my palms begin to sweat

Sometimes I freeze until the light comes
Sometimes I fly into the night
Sometimes I fight against the darkness
Sometimes I'm wrong, sometimes I'm right

Coiled for the spring or caught like a creature in the headlights
Into a desperate panic or a tempest of blind fury
Like a cornered beast or a conquering hero

The menace threatens, closing
And I'm frozen in the shadows
I'm not prepared to run away
And I'm not prepared to fight

I can't stand to reason or surrender to a reflex
I will trust my instincts or surrender to my fright

Sometimes we freeze until the light comes
Sometimes we're wrong and sometimes we're right
Sometimes we fight against the darkness
Sometimes we fly into the night

Blood running cold mind going down into a dark night
Of a desperate panic or a tempest of blind fury
Like a cornered beast or a conquering hero

Sometimes I freeze, sometimes I fight
Sometimes we freeze until the light comes
Sometimes I fly into the night
Into the night, into the night

Hold Your Fire is nearly as good as Power Windows (a song like "Big Money" is hard to top) and a few notches below Grace Under Pressure, which, pound for pound, delivers consecutive knockout blows myriad bands wish they were capable of (prog and otherwise).

The live version of "Turn the Page" from A Show of Hands is even better. Geddy's bass punches through the mix more.

I like "Prime Mover" a lot. Now that's an underrated Rush song. "Open Secrets" probably has the best lyrics on the album (I know, it's debatable).
