King Crimson isn't obscure just like Yes, Genesis, ELP, Jethro Tull and Pink Floyd aren't obscure. The main '70s Brit prog acts, aka the Big Six, aren't. Tool picked KC to open for them because they're fans. If we drop to "Tier 2," e.g. Renaissance, Camel, Nektar, that's different.

Yeah so? Most people don't pay much attention to the opening band unless they are already fans. I'm sure it turned some people onto KC but that by itself would not be enough to launch them into the mainstream. Plus not everyone is a Tool fan.

Try Jonesy also...the first 3 or 4 are all good....a little like Crimson at times with a mix of things going on with some mellotron and jazz influences.

Some great stuff off of the 'Dawn' (Pye) and 'Neon' (RCA) stables already mentioned by the venerable Dr Wu to which i'd like to add 'Quicksand- Home is where I belong' ![]() A couple of other oddities i'm very fond of include: Mr Albert Show- Warm Motor 1971 ![]() Chemical Alice- Curiouser & Curiouser 1980 ![]() |

They probably are now. They made a splash 20ish years ago with their debut. They were supposed to play Prog Fest '97 in Los Angeles but had another commitment. The replacement act was Big Elf.

I've been really enjoying Ritual (from Sweden) lately. Patrik Lundstrom from Kaipa is such a great singer. Are they obscure?

^That Yaarandoo, nice eclectic music, reminds me of Jade Warrior who were mentioned above.

I'm partial to this private press Ozzie nugget: Very obscure until recently, when it got a CD reissue. Now just pretty damn obscure.

I have all their output (vinyl & CD) and Greenslade's solo stuff as well - like you said not obscure for 70's prog freaks - but very obscure to anybody younger probably and mainstream pop fans of the same era.

Is Jade Warrior obscure enough? They never get mentioned even when people make lists of third tier bands.
If not obscure enough, then I'd say Henry Kaiser, a real avant-garde guitar player. I just bought a couple new ones from him, as it happens. Edited by HackettFan - April 02 2018 at 22:11 |

Well it sounded very metallish to me(especially for the time period).

proto metal? Nah.. nothing of the sort. That track is an attention getter.. and the one that hooked us when we evaluated the group for addition. Yeah that one is heavy and kicks more ass than even Hillary can toss at ya. but the album is no one trick pony.
very good and interesting album.. do check it out. .and Aussie prog if so inclined. There are a lot of gems there.. and a long running thread here dedicated to those bands. Here is my favorite from the album |

Sounds like proto metal. Ever hear Buffalo? Master's Apprentice was another one. Also Blackfeather(but don't know what they sound like).

Not deliberately now no. I don't hold a musical grudge. However, there is so much music out there that to be honest they are no longer on my radar.

as alluded to in another thread.. some of the best obscure stuff has come from the land down under.
One of my favorites.... turn up that bitch.. and blow thy speakers... |

King Crimson opened for Tool. No way would I categorize them as obscure.

That was 15 years ago! You've been deliberately avoiding exploring the band for 15 years?

Heck even Gentle Giant is obscure in the "real world." Not sure about King Crimson though. I think most music fans at least know about them regardless if they are prog fans or not.
