Hey Cacho,

I think you hit the nail on the head, Spock's Beard is a great way to go.  Personally, I would consider "V" their most symphonic but all nine of their albums have some redeeming qualities.  I'm partial to the Neal Morse era CD's though the NdV ones are good as well.

As for Frost*, I personally love them, though I wouldn't call them symphonic.  They're almost pop prog, a lot of catchy melodies, some heavy guitar, odd time signatures and great musicianship.  I would put them more in the realm of the more recent English Prog a la Arena.  I'd check out their streaming tracks before I got anything, just incase.

Finally, a symphonic recommendation.  I bought one of the songs off of Unitopia's "The Garden" and it's pretty good.  I'd give the one song that I heard a four star rating.

Also, Singularity's latest "Of All the Mysteries" is great as well.  The epic piece "Islands" that ends the CD is one of the better epics that I've heard in a while.

Enjoy,

My friend has some of the tracks, and I've listened to them. They're not spectacular, and I really wouldn't waste my time hunting it down. Anyway, if you still want to hunt it down, I have no idea where you could get it.

Thanks progrocker, I kind of figured that they're not their best but still, I want them for completion purposes.  Still looking.

You know Tom, I've been listening to those bonus tracks on Sum Of No Evil quite a bit lately, and I think I was a little harsh.  The River is a really nice song, but I've totally fell for Turn The Stone.  It's one of those rockier numbers they do so well, a little in the vein of Sword Of God and Paradox Hotel (track).  The other bonus track, Regal Divers is easily the weaker of the three.

Incidentally buddy, I finally got round to listening to the stream tracks of Frost on PA.  The track from Milliontown is great, so I've ordered the album.

Hope you and the family are well.

Hey Roj, good to hear from you, hope all is well on your end too.

Yeah, I'm still looking for some digital outlet for the extra songs but no luck as of yet.

Glad to hear that you like what you've heard from Frost*, let me know what you think of the album once you get it.

Enjoy

Tom

Hey Pablo ! Always nice if someone asks for suggestions. But of course I will have to take your personal taste into account then and not just think about mine !
First: The four bands you mention along with TFK is not all in that specific corner. Have you heard about Agents of Mercy ? It's the latest project with Roine as initiator. It has to be another great effort. I only recently bought it but the rumours say it's great . I would check it out if I were you. And there's of course Tomas Bodin solo. Do you know any of his albums ? I know four of them and they are all great.
If you want to go for something spectacular released this year: go for Martigan's latest called Vision. If you are in for some great neo prog with symphonic leanings: take this one. Highly recommended !

Here's an old friend, I was just thinking about posting to this thread this morning . . . and welcome CCVP.

Your post segues into my thought this morning.  It seems that Retropolis is one of the lower rated Flower Kings albums.  Any thoughts as to why?

Personally, I enjoy it a lot . . . er, at least I enjoyed it a lot this morning (my favorite Flower Kings al;bums tend to vary frequently).  I find that starting an album off with ten or fifteen minutes of a brilliant instrumental to be a gutsy mood.  In all honesty, it was the first CD that I had picked up by them and spawned my fascination with the Flower Kings.

So I ask you all, how do you feel about Retropolis (the album) and why?

Well, i do'nt have any specific reason. Some some reason Retropolis never clicked in me. Even though i have the album, sometimes it just feels like a waste of money because i rarelly listen it and when I listen it seems boring. I never understood quite why. Maybe because it seems like a worse Back in the World of Adventures, but . . . . i dont know. . . .

But to be quite frank here, I think that MOST Flower Kings albums are underrated. Look at Unfold the Future, Stardust We Are, Paradox Hotel and try to realise what an enormous effort it was to come up with such albums. Think about the wonderful songs they have.

Hell, I seriously think that many reviewrs don't give enough thought to their reviews. Most of them just seem too hasty opinions. I mean, i usually take months and months to listen a single album and, in  the end, I like most of them. I took over a year to get into Gentle Giant, but now they are one of my favourite bands. When I think about the effort I make to appreciate music and the amount of 1 and 2 stars reviews given to new albums in this site I can only think that people don't really try. That becomes obvious when you look at TMV's The Bedlam Goliath (which is a great album), Ayreon's Y (which i have chosen as the album of the year) and even Opeth's Watershed: all underrated.

The same happens with most progressive metal, retro-prog and neo-prog albums. Maybe it is a local sport to bash things you don't know well (or that you don't want to know well), but still,  i do my best to be fair to the bands and the albums I know. The problem is that some albums, like Retropolis, just don't click.

I can relate to your thoughts on Retropolis.  I feel much the same about Adam and Eve.  It's a good enough album I guess, but there's nothing on it that really grabs me.  If I'm going to listen to something by The Flower Kings, there seem to be so many options that I prefer.

Ironically, I think you're spot on with your thoughts on their albums being underrated, I think all three that you single out are some of their best albums.  Every time I listen to "Paradox Hotel" I seem to find some song that had gone unnoticed until now.  "Stardust We Are" was the album that my wife and I listened to on the way back and forth from LaMaze class for a month, it's a fantastically relaxing album.  "Unfold the Future" was my most recent purchase (and the last studio album that I needed).  It's got a great jazzy feel and Jonas Reingold shows that he is one of the best modern prog bassists going these days.

I too am amazed that they don't have any higher ranked albums.

I'm hoping to see them again next year, maybe a Transatlantic / Flower Kings double billing...I can dream, can't I?  (Howard, if you're reading this, soungs like a great line up for 3RP 2010. . . I'm just sayin')

Here's my thought on Retropolis.

It's not their best album, but is there a better track than the title track.  That is just an amazing piece of music and always gets me going.  I think the problem maybe the rest of the album can't follow up such an opener.

There are some other good ones though.  Melting Pot, Judas Kiss and Flora Majora come to mind.  Incidentally my wife (who is not a prog fan) really likes some TFK songs, although they tend to be the less proggy ones, for obvious reasons.  One of them is The Road Back Home, which she thinks is like Dire Straits........and I have to agree!

I don't think this album can compete with World Of Adventures which is much more consistent.  I'd rate Retropolis as about 4.2 stars (not bad for a weaker album, eh?), whereas the debut would be a 5 for me.

Nice to see the bump for this thread.

Just had another look at the songlist of this album but actually I'm quite fond of Judas Kiss, Retropolis (great instrumental), Flora Majora and Road Back Home. The rest is forgettable though and it's not their very best effort.
In the end all TFK's albums are great ! A very consistent band.

Today was such a beautiful day (68F/20C no wind and no clouds) I had to celebrate it with some particularly sunny music and outdoor activities. I threw around a frisbee with a friend with Adam & Eve playing in the background. My friend actually liked the music so that's always a good thing and I had forgotten how great of an album this is. I normally don't like Starlight Man but today it worked with the atmosphere while A Vampire's View, which I normally love, didn't work at all. Timelines and Days Gone By were disappointing as usual and Adam & Eve was merely okay. The rest of the tracks, especially Love Supreme, were all perfectly great Spring/Summer songs. Then I laid on a field and listened to Garden of Dreams with no distractions. It was a great day for music.

Also, has anyone checked out the Agents of Mercy CD yet? I reluctantly bought it after a while after hearing the tracks on the Agents of Mercy myspace page, but it's really been growing on me.
Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal.

Thanks Roj and Captain,

I haven't been able to find anything yet either, though I haven't tried a few download services.  I'll keep searching.  If anyone happens to run across them in their travels through the ether, please let me know.
