The Hopper bass on Third is heavy though.

Here's mine, although to be fair, I like Kate Bush's album as a pop record (which is saying a lot, since I hate most 80s pop and as soon as I heard the first track a severe wave of buyer's remorse fell over me). I did. Speed King seems heavier to me... loud, fast, intense, great riff, thick sound, that great, twisty solo at the start... suppose it's just differing opinions on what constitute heaviness. The typical 'metal' sound has never struck me as particularly heavy. |

I know. Also listen to Elton Dean's Unlimited Saxophone Company. That's also heavy. Just saxophones and a trumpet (I think). |

Black Oni is guitar free. That's not true. Edited by Padraic - July 06 2009 at 16:00 |

I can only think of three right now for myself. But yes, that criterion works well. Albums so terrible you're tempted to throw them away, so they don't foul up your collection with their stinkiness. |

That organ solo (the huge stretchy one) is massive, raw and mind-stretching. Heavy is not simply having guitars and drums and being loud. |

I only rate albums one star if I can't see myself listening to them again ever.
I've handed out fewer than ten of those honors. |

The opening solo on Facelift is heavy?
Gosh, you need educating on heaviness. Try Guapo's Black Oni (especially one section) and get back to me. Edited by James - July 06 2009 at 15:50 |

Come on, compare Speed King to The Mirror or Caught in a Web. Speed King is heavy, though more raw sounding IMO, it doesn't create a wall of sound like those from DT do. |

Hm... oersonally, I wouldn't consider anything off it remotely as heavy as Speed King or the opening solo off Facelift or something like that. It's pretty metallic, I'll give you, but I don't really mind any musical styles enough to complain if they seem well-written and memorable to me (I mean, my main problem with metal is when it's done very blandly, which is a bit... the songs off Awake don't strike me as that). |

Perhaps because it has it's pretty heavy moments? I find it good, specially 6:00, Innocence Faded and Lifting Shadows.., while Scarred, Voices, The Silent Man, Space Dye-Vest and Erotomania have there really good moments. |

World Record you may like, it's easier on the ears and the songs aren't quite so weird.
No, I must order Thin Air. I need it on CD. MP3s/FLAC just won't do. Edited by James - July 06 2009 at 15:42 |

I haven't heard World Record, but the VDGG albums that I prefer are very small.

Awake and Images and Words are so close that it doesn't matter too much to me. |
