What exactly do you mean by "intellectual tradition" and that the U.S. has none? I am wondering what specifically you are referring to and how narrow your definition might be. The U.S. certainly has its own literary tradition, utterly divorced from European tradition (with great authors that Atavachron pointed out, and more that I would suggest); it has a music tradition that is perhaps stronger than many European nations (Americans, after all, invented jazz, blues, country-western and rock & roll); as far as science, I don't believe any single country could compare to the U.S. in the past 150 years in regards to scientific advancement; in philosophy, the profound political thought of the framers of the U.S. Constitution actually influenced the French Revolution (and because they were French, they naturally botched it Wink), and then there was Thoureau and Emerson, Santayana, David Kellogg-Lewis, and many more.

So, again, what exactly are you referring to, because I don't believe you know what you're talking about. It would seem you have a distorted view of what makes America, driven by a clutch of prejudices, jaded beliefs and opinions -- an outsider's view who only watches TV.

^^^  Good comment.  India is a melting pot of ancient and medieval Hindu, Mughal/Persian and colonial influences.  And Indian culture is pretty old.  It's just more noticeable, perhaps, in USA because people from such varied ethnic origins live in the same land.  Also, it will take the next few generations for true integration of some of these ethnic cultures to happen.  My cousin sis in IL married another Indian but her sister-in-laws are in relationships with Caucasian guys.

Though fraudsters live and operate all over the world, they are never more cleverly exposed than in the police drama "Racket Squad" from 1950s American television. One of the most intelligent American shows ever.I have learned many a lesson from "Racket Squad".

Just got back from Fields Oregon, population 86, one of the most remote spots in America. The Fields cafe is the only business in town. Everyone who works there is packing a gun on their hip. From the guy who pumps the gas to the lady making the great milkshakes. This is the culture of the wide open spaces.

Of course America has culture. This is the same country that brought us Rock 'n' Roll, Batman, Star Trek, and a Censored ton of great movies.

EDIT: Censored, forgot the books. Thanks Avatachron.

Probably after 10 pages of discussion, it's a totally irrational generalisation (not to mention fallacy) that Americans have no culture). It's only certain folks, or groups of folks, that have a narrow-minded view on life in general, that suffer. Their loss ; the people of the World have so much to offer, and it's up to us to embrace it and improve our knowledge and well-being. Where ever we come from.

The Idiot Gove says he never banned American authors...

...as anyone who has watched Yes, Minister or Yes, Prime Minister is aware, anything said in the corridors of Whitehall can easily be denied and/or retracted

I doubt it very much.   Maybe some silly boycott that lasts two days, but not a ban.

Then they'll both ban their own just to diplomatically correct things. Then all they'll have to read is Australian and New Zealander authors.
