Spoken like a true soldier and a sentiment I felt quite often during my time in the service.

I considered serving in the military, but a health problem would have prevented my enlistment regardless.

I don't have a problem with someone doing either of the three.
My Dad wanted to join the Army at the beginning of WWII but he was married with two small daughters and my Mom wouldn't let him. So he waited for the draft and served in Europe.
When I was a small boy in Springfield, Mo. I could not visit a relative's house without seeing pictures of uncles in uniform. So I understood early on that when I was older I would probably be drafted into the Amy. I was 1A and was drafted and never thought twice about it.
My best friend since junior high school lived in his parent's garage for three years because the FBI was looking for him because he dodged the draft.
My best friend in Nam had gone to Canada for a year before he came home and turned himself in to the draft board.
I never thought one way or another about my two friends' choices.

The US has had an all volunteer military for over thirty-five years so no one has had to seriuosly answer this question since the early seventies.
So, for the sake of discussion, assume that there is still a "draft" and you had just received your notice to report for duty.
Now you really have to decide whether to serve and possibly die or go to jail OR flee to another country and never be able to return to your home and family.

I can't say I have a country.
I live in Italy, but I'm a true American at heart I'm always uncomfortable when I have to sing the Italian national anthem, as well as the American one. I don't feel like I belong to any country.

For any country and national body, absolutely f**king not.
For humanity? I'd be honoured.

Hi,
i would rather die for progressive music ... my country doesn't care for me, so why should I return the favor? Besides, their imperialism died a long time ago ... all you have to do is listen to Amon Duul 2's Mozambique and you know what I am talking about. Being proud of reckless corruption? ... I don't think so.
But if we're talking about America? ... yeah ... I love it! And would not trade it for any country in the world at all ... !!! They may have folks that are crazy with their "politically incorrect bs" ... but in the end, you can vote that sucker out and send him packing! You can't do that in 80% of the world! Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

I would die for the foundational ideology of my country-- freedom and liberty. I don't know in what context my sacrifice would actually preserve these ideologies, though. Usually dying for one's country is a perversion of dying for the political agenda of your leaders, dying to feed the military industrial complex or continue a legacy of unnecessary interventionist foreign policy, etc. The main idea is that I stand for the ideals on which this country is built more than the country itself.

I almost died for both Canada & Australia. I would be more worried about dying on an A 380 never mind a country. Junk. |

Exactly. In a world of multinational interests the concept of 'a country' is outdated. |

Now why did I vote here anyway?
I'm Dutch, because I was born in The Netherlands, which in the past was at times part of the Roman Empire, Spain, France and Germany. Being born there at a certain point in time is by mere chance, no way I'm going to die for it. Would you die if your next throw of the dice turns out to be 6? |
