Back in 1999, Toronto, Ontario, Canada-based Utopian Vision Music released a three-song self-titled EP by ODYSSEY, a band featuring Swedish multi-instrumentalist/producer Dan Swanö (NIGHTINGALE, EDGE OF SANITY, BLOODBATH), Rick Gustafson (ex-MEMORY GARDEN), and Kenth Philipsson (DARK FUNERAL, THE PROJECT HATE). The EP has long been out of print and is a much-sought-after collector's item.

Later this year, Vic Records, which acquired the rights to the EP in 2007, will re-release this slab of epic progressive metal. The EP was remastered by Swanö and will feature no less than six brand new cover versions:

* In The
Heat Of The Night (SANDRA) feat. Marcus Vanhala on lead guitar
* Eyes Of The World (RAINBOW) feat. Tino Kallioniemi on lead guitar
* Shake The Disease (DEPECHE MODE)
* At The Gallows End (CANDLEMASS)
* Gypsy (URIAH HEEP) feat. Dag Swanö on lead guitar
* Lost Horizons (MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP) featuring lead guitars from Vanhala and Morgan Pettersson

Commented Swanö: "Most of these songs were up for 'covering' at some earlier point in my career. The SANDRA song was destined for the cancelled ROUTE NINE full-length album. 'Eyes Of The World' was demoed once before for a cancelled NIGHTINGALE EP where we all recorded one song each and played all instruments too. 'At the Gallows End' and 'Lost Horizons' were both candidates for the cover of choice for 'Until Eternity Ends' until I accidentally stumbled on 'Invisible Sun' and felt a 'black album' treatment of that would be a far more original choice ('Lost Horizons' was also covered by MEMENTO MORI at the same time... same label)."

The cover artwork the ODYSSEY EP reissue, now titled "Reinventing The Past", was created by Ivan at Bragin Design and can be viewed below.

Thanks Steve!!!! I just added this one to my collection from Zune Marketplace.....I love Michael Schenker...will give this one a listen tonight

Hey Steve, did you post about the new Darkwater album yet? I just added their new release to the database: http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=30931.

It doesn't come out until November, however.

Today begins the recording of new album ...

Deliverance, so you will call the new CD that will appear at the beginning of 2011, it is a concept that narrates a dream in which the protagonist crosses the lands of Palestine and on this trip relives the Israelite people's tribulations and sufferings of Jesus Christ.
Everything to arrive at their redemption.

Threshold keyboard player Richard West has enlisted the services of guitarist Ruud Jolie (Within Temptation) and drummer Mark Zonder (Fates Warning) for the recording of a new currently unnamed project fronted by vocalist Farrah West.

The project was first planned in 2002 when Farrah and Richard moved from their UK home to the Czech Republic to find time and space to record their debut album, with guest musicians including guitarist Tore Østby (Ark, Conception). However the project stalled and Richard West spent the following years concentrating on progressive metal band Threshold (Nuclear Blast/Warner), clocking up European chart success with two albums and scoring a motion picture soundtrack slot for his song Pilot In The Sky Of Dreams.

In 2009 Farrah and Richard started to focus once again on the project, co-writing a new album of songs and enlisting the services of legendary Fates Warning (Inside Out) drummer Mark Zonder and guitarist Ruud Jolie from the multi-platinum group Within Temptation (Sony/Roadrunner) for the recordings.

The album is currently in the final stages of production, with an expected release later this year.

Excellent news from Nick Van Dyk and Redemption

Hello folks, and sorry for the long silence from us.  It's been a very busy summer for us away from Redemption, particularly for Ray who as most of you surely know did a reunion tour with the Parallels lineup of Fates Warning to commemorate the 20th anniversary of that fantastic release.

I (Nick) remain in complete remission with no trace of the disease that I announced publicly about a year ago.  I remain on three powerful medications to ensure that the cancer does not return.  Of the five original active lesions in my bones, none are active for cancer and one of them has resolved (i.e. been completely repaired with new bone).  The other four are in the process of being repaired and that is the next big milestone.  Patience is required but I believe they will get there.  If that happens, it is a good sign that I am well down the road to being cured (according to the very aggressive doctor to whom I entrust my care).  However I must remain on these medicines for two more years.  They have many unpleasant side effects but I am resolved to stick with the program and beat "incurable" blood cancer.  Thank you all very much for your prayers, positive vibes and words of support -- they mean a lot.

And so life continues, and with it, a new Redemption CD in the works!  We are in the early pre-production stages at this point, still composing and arranging.  It's too early to say too much, but I can share that the arrangements vary from short (for us!) hard-hitting songs to at least one and possibly two more sprawling ideas, and that a few of the working titles at this point are Noonday Devil, Dreams from the Pit and Rain in my Soul.

We'll have more to post in the coming weeks and months, and hopefully some great new music for you in 2011!

As always, thank you for your support and interest!

Best,

Nick

Seven The Hardway

Scott (Rushfan4) put me on to this band and I urge you to check them out. This is going to be up there with the best of year releases.

Seven the Hardway is a 5-piece progressive rock/metal band based in Southern California and formed in 2009 by guitar virtuoso Tony MacAlpine (Steve Vai, Planet X, CAB), legendary drummer Virgil Donati (Planet X) and renowned vocalist Mark Boals (Uli Jon Roth, Royal Hunt, Yngwie Malmsteen).

Joining MacAlpine, Donati and Boals are bass player Doug Shreeve and 21 year old Argentinian newcomer Stefanía Daniel on guitar.

The band’s blistering 10-track self-titled debut, mixed by the legendary Roy Z, will be released on August 30, 2010 on Mascot/Provogue Records, and their fall European tour kicks off soon after the album’s release.

The band’s live show will consist of their entire new album, a jaw-dropping drum solo from Donati, along with select covers of Tony MacAlpine’s well-known instrumentals. The show will appeal to both followers of MacAlpine, Donati and Boals’ solo and studio work, as well as fans of progressive modern hard rock.

The album is out now on both sides of the atlantic.

The Element

Progressive Metal Act, "The Element" is proud to announce that legendary producer, Beau Hill (http://beauhillproductions.com/), of bands such as RATT, Warrant, Winger, Alice Cooper, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Gary Moore, and Europe, is mixing/mastering the much anticipated album.  Beau Hill showed interest in working with the band a couple months ago after hearing the pre-production of the upcoming album.  We from The Element were ecstatic, considering what an honor it would be to work with such an amazing producer like Beau.

A quote from Beau Hill:

"The Element caught my attention with their excellent material, an unusual focus on arrangement details, and progressive-melodic hooks...sounds like the recipe for a hit to me..."

The first three songs were finished in August and the new single, "She's Made From Sand" is now available for online streaming on our Myspace page.

This is just one piece of the story that is told with our new concept album.  The band has been working on this project for some time and the chemistry between Rafael Macedo, Mitch Stewart (Circle II Circle), Jeremy Villucci, and Henry Moreno (Former Imagika, Taunted) has given way to some amazing material and it is definitely our best work to date. The album is currently untitled. The name of the album, song samples, and hints about the story will be announced soon.

A big thanks to our Fans, Friends and Family, you guys are the BEST!!!

Stay tuned!!!

Agalloch

Pacific Northwest dark metal legends AGALLOCH have completed work on their fourth full-length entitled “Marrow Of The Spirit”, the follow-up to 2006’s “Ashes Against The Grain”.
Image
Where the three predecessors to “Marrow Of The Spirit” (namely “Pale Folklore”, “The Mantle”, and the aforementioned “Ashes Against The Grain”) all differ from each other, the same can be applied with the new album as “Marrow Of The Spirit” is unlike anything AGALLOCH have ever produced before.  This is also the first album to feature new AGALLOCH drummer Aesop Dekker (also in Profound Lore acts LUDICRA and WORM OUROBOROS) and features guest appearances by cellist Jackie Perez Gratz (GRAYCEON, GIANT SQUID, ASUNDER, AMBER ASYLUM), Jeffrey Neblock (VINDENSANG), and Nathan Carson (WITCH MOUNTAIN, TWO-TON BOA, SUNN 0)))).

Recorded and mixed on analog through the means of exquisite vintage gear within the months of July and August in Portland, Oregon at Audible Alchemy Studios with (FAUST guitarist) Steven Wray Lobdell and mastered and manifested in San Francisco, California at Trakworx Studios with Justin Weis (LUDICRA, SLOUGH FEG, HAMMERS OF MISFORTUNE) the six time-stretching songs that encompass “Marrow Of The Spirit” each come across as their own distinct identities amongst themselves.  At over an hour in length, “Marrow Of The Spirit” is AGALLOCH’s darkest, bleakest, most dense, detailed and aggressive album to date and in turn is the most accomplished album of their career.

To officially be released in North America Nov 23th through Profound Lore Records, tracklisting for “Marrow Of The Spirit” goes as follows:

1.    They Escaped The Weight Of Darkness [3:41]
2.    Into The Painted Grey [12:25]
3.    The Watcher’s Monolith [11:46]
4.    Black Lake Nidstang [17:34]
5.    Ghosts Of The Midwinter Fires [9:40]
6.    To Drown [10:27]

WEST COAST TOUR WITH ALLERSEELEN ANNOUNCED

In accordance with the release of “Marrow Of The Spirit”, AGALLOCH have announced a West Coast tour with Austrian industrial/neo-folk/martial ambient act Allerseelen.  The tour begins on Dec 17th in AGALLOCH’s hometown of Portland, Oregon which will also serve as their record release show.  The dates with Allerseelen go as follows:

December
12/17 – Portland, OR @ Berbati’s Pan (w/Aerial Ruin)
12/18 – Seattle, WA @ Neumo’s (w/Alda)
12/21 – Los Angeles, CA @ tba
12/22 – San Francisco, CA @ Great American Music Hall (w/Dispirit)

I am a bit afraid of this reunion, mainly because Dan Rock is not part of the new line up.
I am bit sceptical about Devon as the main songwriter. I'm not that impressed by Deadsoul Tribe.
Still I hope, that they won't dissappoint.Smile
