Though he's far from the best, I'm glad to see that some people are at least mentioning Jim Matheos. He has a unique style, and he's one of my favorites.

Easily Ron Jarzombek. A great technician but more experimental musician and composer. Technically Petrucci is great but he doesn't really stand out in any other way, and Romeo... well, just a very conservative melodic metal guitarist, while people like Jarzombek just do their own thing without caring about musical conventions.
I always liked Fates Warning with Jim Matheos and Frank Aresti, the solo in 'static acts' is one of my all time favourites.
Piggy from Voivod was great as rhythm guitarist, he really marked the extreme metal guitar with his extended chords.

Without question Mikael Akerfeldt. Absolute genius and the fact that he can combine his incredible guitar work with those amazing vocals still blows me away.
Fredrik Thordendal is a stunning player as well. For anyone doubting Thordendal's ability I highly recommend you check out his solo album, Sol Niger Within. It is jaw-dropping.

yep, akerfeldt i would say is a slightly better "musician" because of his ability to sing vocals throughout whole opeth songs (which typically average seven minutes).

Ill do it for what each player specializes in
Romeo: Extreme melodic and fluid solo lines, and heavy as crap riffage
Petrucci: Very versatile, total recall, and speed
Glidenlow: Songwriting, interesting lines
Mikael A. : Writing heavy as well as ambient material, the ability to improvise Very melodically.
Ron Jarzombek: Technique and being a mastermind
Chuck Schuldiner: Metal songwriting, the ability to make hooks in heavy music
Jason Becker: God given talent, ability to write beautiful music, sweeps, the mind of a classical composer.
Overall: petrucci for his natural memorization of extremely tiring material, endurance, speed, and technique, every one else mentioned is very close behind

Rather or not you like Dream Theater, you have to admit that Petrucci is one of the best guitarist of recent years.

I go for the dream duo Dan Rock/Brian McAlpin.Irresistible riffing, otherwordly solos, the "unsung heroes"of prog metal.The Petruccis and Romeos of the planet don't even come close to them in my book.
I actually also rate Jim Matheos higher, he's not famous for solos, but he has a very distinctive style and he's a good songwriter.
I have to hear In the Woods... yet.

Agree totally!! All of DT albums until 6DOIT are excellent examples of the feeling with the guitar on prog metal. Also that final solo on Octavarium is just soooo good!!

Petrucci is amazing!! The best guitar player to come up during the 90s and one of my all time favorite guitarists!! Romeo gets the second place, IMO. He's very influenced by Malmsteen but has reached hiw own style, and definitely he does not sound like any other Malmsteen wennabe, which are very common specially in power metal these days.

I agree with what Mike has said here, Petrucci has a combination of atributes that put him at the top of the pile, though a good number of other guitarists come very close.
