Sure, Perdition City and are Kveldssanger worthy checking out, the only ones that has Glamour and elegance, the rest seems like the kids enjoys them more, maybe is the growling or the noise...
I will recommend getting Perdition City, then Blake's, then Kveld.... and then the suicide mission towards the rest.
I guess the experimental "elegant + growling + noise/heavy" is not a fusion i find amusing...but for that matter this "artistic" band went on Subjective..
Stay classy |

I only have their electronic albums Perdition City and Blood Inside. Perdition City is a great album. I love the atmosphere and the sound of it (it reminds me of the Sin City movie). Blood Inside had some good moments, but it didn't do much for me compared to Perdition City. I haven't heard anything from their metal era.

being Experimental means that I'll check them out eventually (I'm seriously expanding my view over this genre, as well as Krautrock...).

Every single thing this band has released is impressive, their ability to master so many styles is absolutely incredible. All of the "black metal trilogy" is stunning (especially Nattens Madrigal, which I would say is THE perfect black metal album) and their more recent electronic/post-rock works are equally brilliant (Perdition City is my favorite). In addition to the obvious ones already mentioned I'm a big fan of Lyckantropen Themes, a spellbinding piece of downbeat electroncica which I'd recommend to anybody with a taste for ambient music.
Fans of Ulver's black metal period should also check out the first two Borknagar albums (which feature Garm and aren't too stylistically removed from Bergtatt and Nattens) and anything by Arcturus up to The Sham Mirrors (all of which is remarkably avant-garde and boundary pushing in the metal world, further accented by his majestic clean vocals). |

well, sign me on the fanlist; I've listened to all of their albums and like them a lot
as for the metal loving fans of ulver, i think they always kept something really mean/agressive/dark in their sound, even on the silence themed eps and that's probably why it was easy for metal fans to connect with |

What I've listened to sounds totally awesome, but I've yet to get any albums (and living on thirty quid a week it may be a while until I get the oppurtunity )

You can add me as well... )in fact, where ever you have music that is challenging, experimental, unordinary and special, you'll find me there - but not only there obviously).

Unfortunately that's how most people know Ulver. I would go as far as to say even those who are knowledgeable with the field of experimental/post rock really have not heard much from Ulver, even though its under the same genre(here at PA) as GYBE, Sigur Ros, Mogwai, and other such sounds edit: albeit all these bands sound distinctly different from one another, yet share some similar artistic qualities Edited by OpethGuitarist - October 17 2006 at 11:56 |

Funny, I made an observation that most Ulver fans are Metal enthusiasts, though the band released just two metal albums out of more than ten. I guess there are just artists who only a chosen underground scene is exposed to, even though people of other taste would greatly enjoy it, and I'd really like to change that.

I have only heard Perdition City, but it's a fine album. I think I need to get myself some more Ulver...
I'm not interested in their black-metal period though. Edited by Jimbo - October 17 2006 at 11:51 |

Bergtatt and Kveldsanger(spelling?) are markedly different than their later stuff, although Ulver really is impossible to classify.
W&B is a great album to have especially if you have Ulver's earlier works, becuase it shows just how radically different the music changed, which I give extra kudos to, because of having to start entirely over with a new fan base from their black metal works |
