for my money "The Great Deciever" box set, though released in the 90's, is what the 70's King Crimson is all about.  The albums tamed a band that was meant to take improvisatory leaps onstage.  Given the choices, I voted for Larks' Tongues in Aspic, because Jamie Muir still plays on that album, and the compositions heavily bear the mark of having gone through an improvisation stage.
