Chris Cutler is probably worth listing, being a driving force behind the RIO thing. Here's his site for info... http://www.ccutler.com/ 'As Long as He Lies' is a great one, good recommendation young Alex.

I would reccomend Frank Zappa as well, but that would be very time consuming. For another Soft Machine MP3 to add would be "As Long Has He Lies Perfectly Still" from Volume Two would be good.

Let's not forget David Sylvian (collaborations with Holgar Czukay -- ex Can) and Fripp.

OK, pretty funny, just wait for me to complain about Gong not being thyere, and then put them up Thanks, I see it is a bit of work putting just their listing together, for me as a fan there's those half dozen main releases, and loads of extraneous, but interesting, stuff.

Alexander's recommendation of The Muffins is a good one, but an even more prominent ommission from the site to date is GONG, they really must be here.

I'm going to echo the call for the essential Amon Duul II, again!

I'd like to see some Amon Duul II, Zappa, and Todd Rundgren -- three of my favorites. Of course, Zappa will be an ordeal for obvious reasons; and Todd will be a strange case to deal with, considering he released dozens of albums that are not prog in any sense, yet a handful that are prog in the best sense! Oh classification, when "Hello it's Me" and "A Treatise on Cosmic Fire" (37 minute synth-prog beast) come from the same dude... |

Addendum: I'm guessing that Frank Zappa is missing because he has so many albums that it would take a year just to make his "piece" of the site! |

Well, you asked, so... If and when time is available, I can think of a few groups who would seem to deserve a place on the site. First and foremost, XTC should be included. I can help here if requested (as I did with The Church). Second, I think 10CC deserves to be included, especially in as much as Supertramp and Klaatu are both represented, and 10CC is just as prog, if not moreso, than either (I can help with 10CC as well). Also, 10CC and Supertramp are contemporaries, and Klaatu acknowledges both as influences. Third, I would include Babble (New Zealand), even though they only released two albums. I think if you listen to them, you will agree that they are "prog" at least as much as some others currently on the site. Fourth, I might include Skeleton Key (U.S.). Although they are not entirely "prog," they have definite prog roots and influences. I recommend a listen or two to their new album, Obtainium. Finally, I realize and appreciate that you approached your "categories" from a very keen perspective. However, I would suggest that there should be another category, and that some bands already present are "mis-categorized" in that respect. The missing category is "progressive pop" (which is not an oxymoron) or just straight "progressive rock." This is the category in which I would put Supertramp, Klaatu, 10CC, XTC, The Church, and others, including Godley/Creme (ex-10CC), and, possibly, Queen. Either that, or all of them would have to be categorized as "art rock," though some of them are not. Thanks for the forum, and keep up the amazing work! |
