I would go as far to say that the whole Canterbury Scene excelled at sophisticated humor alongside top notch musical accompaniments but Gong with Daevid Allen was some of the cream of the crop for sure :)

^ I don't believe schadenfreude is required to find NY3 funny

First of all: I am not offended at all; I merely stated an opinion about these two songs. Maybe Fripp recorded the argument, but I could have sworn the father was PH. Oh well. But I still think this is serious stuff; Fripp's music just underlines the heated debate and is perfectly fitting for it, but funny? Not really; only if you are into schadenfreude (one of the few Germanisms in the English language). |

I think Mick is right that Gong is consistently funny on many of their songs as well as Beefheart though his humor is a bit twisted.
I think Hatfield and the North are humorous on many of their tracks ....that sly intellectual cheeky Brit style of funny. As well as Giles Giles and Fripp....though they only did the one lp as far as I know. ;)

Not on your list but i find "Billy The Mountain" from Zappa's "Just Another Band From LA" one of the most hilarious pieces of music ever laid down in prog format!

PH does not appear on NY3. Fripp recorded an actual argument he heard from his NY apartment and those are the only words that appear in the song. I find the juxtaposition of this sampled argument on top of some ripping Fripp prog completely funny...your mileage may vary. The fact that you seem offended that I might be amused by this would lead me to suggest perhaps you could start your own poll titled, "Prog That Is Not Funny" with NY3 and Cat Food as your first options

"[...] Your skin is like vinyl The perfect companion You float my new pool Deluxe and delightful Inflatable doll My role is to serve you Disposable darling Can't throw you away now Immortal and life size My breath is inside you I'll dress you up daily And keep you till death sighs Inflatable doll Lover ungrateful I blew up your body But you blew my mind [...]" Funny enough to get my vote even though the humour in the lyrics is somewhat undermined by the dark tone of the music.

I wouldn't call "Cat Food" or "NY3" "funny prog". "Cat Food" has some
funny aspects but is a criticism of precooked supermarket food.
Satirical, yes, but with a real background.
And "NY3" is an argument between parents and an unruly daughter (the father being "sung" by Peter Hammill); I don't think this is funny at all. "NY3" has some great lines like Mother: "You're going for an abortion, baby; I never had to". Father: "No way never"! or Mother: "And you're a cocaine sniffer. And you're a cocaine sniffer. And you're a cocaine sniffer - don't you call me a slut"! You may think such lines are funny, but this is very serious stuff. Edited by BaldFriede - March 21 2018 at 09:39 |

To address several comments...these are all songs that make me laugh either based on the lyrics, or due to the combination of the lyrics and their musical setting. There's no right or wrong here and I didn't expect everyone to share my sense of humor, funny is in the ear of the beholder
I've added a couple clarifications to the poll entries: 1) Twelfth Night's: We Are Sane refers specifically to the "Blah Blah" speech that begins the live version on Live or Let Live. 2) Giles Giles & Fripp: Elephant Song has been changed to Fripp's recitation of "The Saga of Rodney Toady" story that is broken up over the intro's to several songs on the album.
Now then, I'll limit my votes to the top 10 that make me laugh the most: Tull: The Hare... IQ: My Legs Kevin Gilbert: Suit Fugue Beefheart: Pena/Fast & Bulbous Zappa: Bobby Brown Goes Down GG&F: The Saga of Rodney Toady Roots of Consciousness: For Radio Airplay Gong: Wet Cheese Delirium Soft Machine: Why Am I So Short? And a write in vote for: Zappa: Yellow Snow/St Alphonso's Pancake Breakfast (live version on 'The Crux of the Biscuit') And remember, this is a multiple choice poll |

Not sure why the Roxy Music one is funny? Maybe I haven't listened to the lyrics properly.

Some excellent choices here. I kept changing my mind as I scrolled down it. I wanted to vote for the Roxy Music, almost voted for the King Crimson, and wound up voting for the Syd Barrett.

love An Inmates Lullaby - my favorite on Glass House (which isn't among my favorites) but never knew it was funny - probably because I've not payed attention to the lyrics.
A lot of obscurer bands are successful in combining humor and music without just ending up creating silly forgettable music. Second Hand Death May Be Your Santa Claus is almost physical in its humor. Supersister are hugely entertaining and combines beauty, warmth and lighthearted silliness at once - a little like Caravan and Hatfield... well most of Canterbury. Same can be said about Moving Gelatine Plates. The absurd surrealism of Can's lyrics is often fun as well... Faust is a lot of fun too I think... there's plenty. I think my favorite song in the poll is In Every Dream Home a Heartache though - which perfectly illustrates that having a sense of humor doesn't have to ruin the emotional experience of a song if you're smart and talented enough. |
